Thread: Old Japanese Cartoons: Whatcha Watchin'?

  1. I just saw the Cowboy Bebop episode "Pierrot Le Fou" again over the weekend. It'd probably been a good ten years since the last time I saw it.

    God damn.

The entire studio was taking its vitamins that month.

  2. I really need to grab the bluray set. Does anyone know if there's a difference between international versions of it?

  3. Old Japanese Cartoons: Whatcha Watchin'?

Shouldn't be any for the show-proper, I know the 'Remix' version was a slightly edited run but it should be labeled as a separate entity.

I've bee eyeballing the laserdisc set, they look like LPs.

  4. Does Serial Experiments Lain count as an old cartoon yet? It has all the markings of something that's good when you're a brooding 17-year-old with a Portishead CD and a boner and is best left to memory, but it's still really good! It has a real poetic sensibility about it--it's not afraid to express something in the abstract at the expense of pacing and maintaining clear diegetic boundaries. Like those disembodied little messages that keep popping up. Who's reading them? Just me in my world or people in the show's in theirs? Who cares, that's who.

The empty space in some of these shots combined with not-quite-symmetrical shapes and not-quite-parallel lines frustrates the eye in exactly the right way.

  5. I couldn't shake the feeling that the dude saying "PRESENT DAY! PRESENT TIME!" in that show's open was actually Chester from Sifl and Olly. Lain was a much better show than most of the early 2000s stuff that followed.

Lain, like most things Japanese, kind of goes to shit once they try to explain everything.

What's the deal with Ghost in the Shell. Is there an order I should be watching it in for maximum storyline enjoyment? What's this 2.0 shit?

  8. #78
If I remember right, 2.0 is a release of the movie on dvd with added cg crap.

  9. 2.0 turns everything that was green to Piss Yellow and ruins a lot of really quiet scenes with already-dated computer graphics. It's a waste of fuckin' time.
