I got my hands on a disc I've been wanting for a long time now. Excitement!

I got lucky, mostly. Everyone on the Neo forums knows I'm both a Transformers and a laserdisc nut, and one of the guys wasn't a collector but still had a bunch of old discs. He checked it out, it was good, and he sold it to me for $75 shipped. That's way more than I'm willing to pay for any other disc, but well below market value for this one, which is the single LD I wanted the most.

Picture quality is a mixed bag. I think you'd appreciate it, Yeller. It looks a bit different from the DVD release, as this still has that "hand animation on film" look instead of the digital clean lines look of a remastered disc. They messed up on the colors a bit I think, reds are a bit too strong, I had to dial back the color a bit on my TV to keep it from bleeding. I heard the other TF LD release had better image quality, but that one has Japanese subtitles hard coded into the image, this one doesn't. One thing I did notice is that there doesn't seem to be some of the animation errors I remember from the DVD release.

Audio is awesome, it blows the DVD release out of the water. Uncompressed TF buttrock. It is mono though. Spike doesn't say "Shit!" in this one though.

  7. Too cool!

Picked up some good Criterion Collection stuff over the weekend, The Fisher King, Flesh for Frankenstein (aka Andy Warhol's Frankenstein), The Hidden Fortress, Lawrence of Arabia, and Andrei Rublev.

Flesh for Frankenstein has one of the best lines of all time. "To know death Otto, sometimes you have to fuck life in the gallbladder!"
