Thread: TNL Gentlemen's Laserdisc Society

I should get that one sometime!

  2. It was a cheap pickup! I saw it a few days ago at the record store, was sure somebody'd snap it up as "wall art". Stopped in today and lucked out.

Also scored some Criterion stuff: Sling Blade, Soft Skin, Mon Oncle, Forbidden Games, and Bad Day at Black Rock.

I don't know what any of those are. I'm uncultured.

  4. I don't know a couple of 'em either. This has been a pretty great excuse to watch movies outside of my normal range.

Seriously, I've found so many greats that I wouldn't have otherwise watched. And some stinkers that I can make fun of!

I got a movie a while back called "Time to Kill" with a young Nic Cage. I thought I was getting "A Time to Kill."

The text on the back sounded interesting. It was wretched!

  6. Ha! I've been holding on to a Michael Biehn movie called "Timebomb" that I'm meaning to watch soon, apparently it's a 'supersoldier with amnesia' kinda thing. I'd never heard of it!

It may be the missing (failure) link as to why Biehn never really broke out after Terminator and Aliens! I'm excited to watch it. It got super-buried. Never got a DVD release outside of one of those 'print on demand mail order' Warner Archives kind of deals.

Mon Oncle is a fun one. It's not lol-funny, but it does defy you to be in a bad mood while watching it. I think you'll dig it.

  8. Read up about open matte Kubrick movies, it's a thing.

Bad Day at Black Rock was amazing! One of the best Westerns I've ever seen. Lee Marvin and Ernest Borgnine vs a one armed Spencer Tracy.

  9. It is. But that doesn't mean I'm any less tickled by laserdisc guy talking about the preservation of aspect ratios in home media.

  10. You do know that most of them are Widescreen, right? Good talk.

All the Criterion stuff starting in 1984 is in the proper aspect ratio.

For the occasional obscure 'doesn't really exist on any other format' movie, I don't really care either way. I'll survive having a 4:3 copy of The 10,000 Fingers of Doctor T or whatever. Especially at $1 in a record bin!
