Thread: TNL Gentlemen's Laserdisc Society

  1. #311
As I mentioned in the haul thread, finally grabbed a Wega off Craigslist, a KV-27FS200. In the laserdisc circles I always heard about how magical these TVs were for LD, having excellent comb filters so you can hook the player with excellent results without having to run it through converters and processors. Well, popped in a movie, and it's pretty legit. The component input isn't a huge leap up from my old Samsung, but the Sony blows it away in composite.

Also Yeller, I got in Air Force One the other day, and that was the movie I watched to test last night. Thanks! Also, the 1996 I Love Lucy calendar was a nice touch, lol. This is way better than my old copy, there's some speckling during the opening and the very end of side 1, sides 2 and 3 are clean. Nothing that bothers me!

  2. I'm glad that got in ok!

    Tonight's watching:

  4. Laserdiscs are silly but

    I just

I just want to smell that Criterion The Killer a little.

  5. It is *so fresh*. My DVD copy died in a move (back when I kept dvd cases even), I'm happy to have a 1:1 LD replacement. The gatefold is really nice, too.

That Magnificent Ambersons is pretty much the nearest thing to complete that movie is ever going to get. Even has a little booklet with captions in it to follow along the 'uncut' Orson Welles storyboards.

I watched that Killer disc a few weeks ago, fantastic movie! The transfer isn't great but from what I understand it was the best they had at the time.

  7. Killer / Better Tomorrow 1 & 2 all had fairly rough transfers, I expect the answer is "1980s Hong Kong movie storage" related.

Yeah, they didn't realize they were making a classic at the time, it was just another of the hundreds of movies HK cranks out all the time.

  9. In which the Criterion Collection says "fuck you" to MGM.

  10. Ahhhh, open-matte The Shining. All 'widescreen' versions chop off the top and bottom of the frame.
