I would almost say an empty chassis with green stuff you could put textures on would be a good middle ground if the actual aesthetic is impractical.

The Marvel movies have an interesting approach, with physical pieces the actors interact with that get swapped out in post. I imagine it helps substantially with lighting the 3D elements, too.
