Did you play Final Fantasy Adventure? It's almost exactly that, for better or worse.
I keep seeing people talk on Twitter about Sword of Mana being better.
Those people are at least 10 years younger than me and Sword of Mana is trash compared to glorious Final Fantasy Adventure of Mana

No, I haven't played Adventure, although I did get the cart a few months ago. Maybe I'll pop it in and see if I like it any better.
