I ordered a new HOTAS today (Thrustmaster T-Flight Hotas X) after trying to play Elite: Dangerous with a mouse and keyboard and getting frustrated; it seems blasphemous to play it like that. I haven't owned a flight stick since the 90s so I'm kinda excited! Went over to GOG and picked up the entire Wing Commander series for good measure.

Weirdly enough, Elite plays great with a regular controller although the standard 360/PS3 controller is one button short of mapping every necessary function. I think I had to keep my wireless keyboard handy for tapping a key to lower landing gear.

The HOTAS is a bit pricey for me but at some point I'll pick up one of those ~$120 Saiteks after I square away my racing rig.

I am sure you can find a used HOTAS on CL or something.

But that means talking to the kind of CL people that would hoard flight sticks. I'm not sure I'm ready to go down that path.
