Can capture bonuses be combined? I've been trying to get the curve ball and nice bonuses at the same time but have been failing pretty bad at the timing for both together with a successful capture.

Keep battery saver on (it dims the screen like phone calls do when it's close to something) and turn off AR mode like suggested. Then you just leave it in your pocket until it either vibrates or screeches loudly if your volume is on.
It'll still suck your battery dry, just not quite as much. Between this and the amiibo app I think Nintendo just isn't sure how to regulate phone battery usage.

To use battery saver mode you have to turn your phone upside down to activate it. It will put your phone into a sleep-like mode but will still buzz when Pokes are near.
