that should be in a game.
Double points if it is said to a girl with a tit armor bikini.
"bitch you basic, those goblins go'n to spill your guts out. Go put on some real armor."
I think the sprite-based graphics kept it in check mostly. It's only a recent thing for me. The first time I found it really annoying was while playing Kingdom Hearts. I just could not stand to look at the way the characters were dressed. Eternal Sonata was the last straw. All these characters look the same, they wear outrageous clothing that NO ONE would wear into battle, and I just can't sympathize with them anymore. If I were really in the game, I'd be like "seriously, that's what you're going to wear into battle? GTFO of my party."

what i like and don't like in jrpgs is like porn: i don't know what it is but i'll know it when i see it.
but long loading times before battles sucks, especially if there are a lot of battles. I don't mind it in FFIX because it's fantastic but it infuriated me in Skies of Arcadia because it was even worse. Convoluted crap, stupid anime stories, forgettable stories, unrelenting random battles, infuriating boss fights, the worst most obnoxious characters ever; i can deal with and even enjoy all of it in some circumstances but i can't stand it in others.
Donk
I've really fallen from the RPG waggon. I found some where around the end of the PS1 era to the middle of the PS2 era I started to drift away from them. I think the main culprit was how convoluted the systems got. Things just seemed to get overly complicated for no reason other than doing something different, and to pack in as many "systems" as they could. I found myself not finishing a lot of titles, thinking it was a matter of time investment, but then caught myself going back to older RPGs no problem. As cliched as it may sound I think something like Final Fantasy IV struck the right balance for me. On the other end of the spectrum I don't want too simple of a set up. I don't want the game playing the battles for me.
For me lunar eb sega cd was the peak. Maybe the first half of 7 or 9. 12 was ok too.
But the overly complicated systems tend to fall flat as the enemies never require much effort. If you had to build your character just right to beat something it would probably feel more rewording.
Yeah, I loved the fights in Lunar: EB against the backup calling goblins in the forest where you meet Jean and the Grindery. I recall you had to really think about what you were doing, prioritizing the Goblins that were showing the "call backup" tell, while still trying to conserve mp.
Vincent isn't emo, he's kawaii and he twirls guns.
