Thread: The VR thread

  1. So it looks like Echo Arena will be permanently free for anyone who adds it to their library in the first three months, but will cost money after that. So even if you're not sure on it, or you aren't getting VR until later in the year or whatever, you should add it next week.

Good looking out about that! I didn't know it was currently free.

I've been on the grind with my VR app Raybeem, we just released the demo for it. Please check it out and give feedback if you can.

The Demo is compatible with HTC Vive, Vive, and Desktop. Demo available for Windows and Mac (no VR support yet).

Here's a video where I run through the general functionality.

  3. I like the interactivity, limited though it is. If there were a way to make that connect to the music -- create loops of visuals or something -- that would be pretty neat.

    Thanks for checking it out!
I'm trying to take a "lean" approach towards getting it out as early as possible, with as broad a variety of themes that I can manage. I'm aiming to launch with 3 different ones. Over time I'll be making incremental updates to add in more polish and new themes. The hands will function differently in each theme, but how that ends up working will likely be based on more feedback from users. I'm really just figuring it out as I go along.

During testing I've had over the past few months, it became clear that some people really wanted to interact with the environments. Not everyone felt that way, but most people did. So I put a bigger focus on being able to effect the particles floating around in the default theme. Which ended up pushing the demo back a bit. For the better.

The ultimate challenge has been getting this thing working. I've built out what's essentially a media player application, so getting all the MP3 playing, online streaming, file navigating, etc. was a pain. Raybeem has a "react" mode, where it'll react to Windows audio playing in Spotify, YouTube, or whatever. But you can't control Spotify or YouTube from within Raybeem. Not yet, anyway. So I had to create an option for people wanting to load in their music, their EDM mixes, audiobooks, or whatever.

Most of that stuff's in place, so I'm mainly bug fixing and trying to polish off the additional 2 themes to prep for release.

Over the course of developing Raybeem, I've found it to be a relaxing and meditative experience when you put in the music you love. Whether you want some classical music tranquillity, or heavy metal excitement, I want to offer a vibe that fits what mood you wanna be in. I don't think that it's for everybody but a lot of music fanatics I know are into what it is. A lot of my friends are ravers or DJs so that might have a lot to do with it.

BTW, @frogacuda, are you saying if you download the Echo Arena beta on Oculus store, you'll get the full version free when it releases?

  5. Have you played Old Friend? That's more of a music video than a visualizer, but I think that does a great job of "be inside this music and dance" thing. This thing has some good ideas as well

No, I don't think the beta counts. But when it launches next Thursday, the full Echo Arena will be free, and if you add it to your account then (or during the next three months) it will be free, and it will remain in your account permanently. I don't think this is tied to hardware activation like Robo Recall was, so people with Vives and possibly even those with no headsets at all should also be able to do this.

  6. I'll check out Raybeem this weekend, looks cool.

I got a Vive Deluxe Audio Strap in yesterday. It's nice! Installation was pretty easy and for the most part it brings the comfort and convenience factor of the Vive roughly up to the level of the Rift. Headphones seem similar in quality, fit on the head is nice, and the back-of-the-head dial is nicer than the Rift's side straps.

  7. They really need to pack that in with new units.

On that note, it seems Oculus is FINALLY retiring the standalone Rift, in favor of a Rift/Touch in a single box. It'll be $499 after the current sale.

EDIT: Interestingly, it looks like they're dropping the Xbox controller and Oculus remote from the package. They aren't really needed for much, but I do like the remote for certain things.

  8. Trent Reznor and Jeff Minter. It's like some weird slashy fanfic gone horribly right.

  9. I like VR, but feels that it is not quite ready and it will probably be more successful in non-gaming applications in the long run.
