I think part of the appeal is that the Gamecube was one of the last traditional consoles, and the last Nintendo system not propped up by gimmicks.
It has no user accounts, it doesn't play movies or music, and internet connectivity was only possible with a rare and barely used peripheral. Those tiny discs are still cute, too.
