    Everyone tried to get away from rivets after it was discovered that if a hit made the vessel vibrate/flex/shatter enough the rivets would break and bounce around on the inside like bullet.

    So if you see any structures built with rivets, it was probably preww2.

    It is also beleived that welding takes up less vulume and weight, allowing for larger battleships and tanks.

    AND Russia invented a type of submerged welding that created a bond stringer than the two sheets of metal joined. (Or maybe Russia makes shit steel.)
