You're overlooking the fact that scarcity generates want. Amiibo wouldn't have been as popular as it was in those first months if not for scarcity hype. The number of people "who want one" goes up as supply goes down.
I walked into a GS last weekend, saw a whole shelf full of the Ness amiibo I needed when I couldn't get one. I had a jolt of OMG HERE IT IS tempered by "Oh, here they are. Nevermind." If I instead found a single one tucked behind a peg full of Animal Crossing guys, I know I would have bought it. Not being able to get a Tickle Me Elmo sold a hell of a lot of Tickle Me Elmos.
