The gun is only one representation of the freedom individuals have against tyranny, and it's a powerful one as we've all found out. I understand people's opposition to removing that symbol plain and clear.

The US is still one of the (if not THE) top motherfuckers in the race when it comes to productivity. The truth of the matter is the US is as rich as it is because it produces and contributes positively to the world (this isn't hand waving that is also contributed negatively as well, mind you). So there's still gold in them hills.

You might be unbeknownstly touching on why rural America latches on to them so desperately: that productivity has left them and they grasp firmly the few remnants they have of that American spirit. Dreaming of a frontier and industrial revolution that has since left them.

It could also explain why city dwellers don't care. What is more American than San Fran or nyc? Who needs a pocket of steel and lead when the spirit of America is in the very air of those places?

The thing is, banning hand guns won't help stop people that murder in those communities. A lot of those guys are connected to drugs. They already have networks to move illegal items. Banning them would just allow them to consolidate power more in those neighborhoods.
