Thread: Save game editors & console modding now illegal in Japan.

  1. Save game editors & console modding now illegal in Japan.

Japan has just banned Action Replays, save editors, & console mods/hacking. Offenders may be fined up to 5.000.000 yen (around $50K) or sentenced to 5 years in jail. Not that I use save editors or hacked systems, but IMO this is a case of government going a bit too far.

  2. Yeah yeah, hacking. But what about bullet point 2?!? No reselling product keys without permission?!
Why are you reading this? go to your general settings and uncheck the Show Signatures box already!

  3. Between this and the 'no videogame rentals ever' thing, video game lobbyists are Japan's NRA.

  4. Seems like something China would do (but not enforce)

I remember Miyamoto commenting about this once. Something about, "If you don't want people buying used games then make games people will want to keep." along those lines.

    Oh shit

I assume a pair of sunglasses floated down onto Ol Miyamoto’s face when he said that.

  10. No problem with #2, because that's piracy if the game is in print/digitally available.

As for the use of cheats- why not just disqualify rather than prosecute? A console should be able to detect cheats or mods & force you to play as a guest (denying trophies/achievements or online play) if you're using one. Game companies should learn to better encrypt their save data.

    Let's outlaw corporate lobbyists.
