Thread: Battletoads NES one-credit emu replay

  1. Battletoads NES one-credit emu replay

After doing a little reasearch, I came across some replay files for VirtuaNES 0.37. The maker of the movies beats Battletoads, only losing one life in the process. They are divided up into the 4 different blocks of stages in the game. I'm not sure if this thread should go in the Guinness Book or here, so I won't take offense if any of you mod-types move it.

Things you need to view the replay:

    - VirtuaNES v0.37 English. NOTE: The replay files will only work properly with this version of VirtuaNES.
    - The Battletoads NES ROM file (Battletoads (U).NES)
    - The four replay files, in Zip form. Keep these in a seperate directory from the emu.
    - A Windows operating system, as the emu is Win-only.
    - A fast enough PC to run the emu (my Celeron 500 works fine).
    - An archive program that can compress the zip files.

Start the emu, load Battletoads, then go to Edit/Movie/Replay and find the replay vid you want to run. The Battletoads emulation will continue when the movies stop, so don't worry if you suddenly find yourself controlling the action. Just hit Alt+P to load the next movie. VirtuaNES is a pretty decent emulator, by the way, even though 0.37's sound isn't very accurate and Battletoads crashes on level 2 in the latest version. It's got a very nice fullscreen mode, too - 640x480 w/scanlines that actually takes up the whole screen, unlike most other emus.

    Enjoy!

  2. Is there any way to know if there was some kind of code used? I have a hard time believing anyone human can beat that game only loosing one life.

  3. #3
I did it without continuing as a kid all the time... I don't remember what the least number of lives I lost was...

    It's all in the memorization.
HA! HA! I AM USING THE INTERNET!!1

  4. The only legitimate cheat code (heh, that's a nice oxymoron) for Battletoads is a 5-lives-instead-of-3 code. It appears Player X in this demo used that code, but it doesn't really make any difference since PX only loses one life and their toad gets hurt just like normal.

Just download the files and watch. It's quite impressive. I didn't compare the scores at the beginning and end of each movie, so I'm not sure if save states were used or anything like that. Somehow I doubt it. This guy (or gal) knows what they're doing.

  5. Save states can't be used when recording a movie. It stops it.
