Actually, instead of babbling on at great length about the scoring system, I suspect it would be much simpler if everyone were to ask whatever questions they might have.
I will say this, though: you're missing out if you haven't played this game for score. Playing for score will give you a greater understanding of the gameplay mechanics and stage design, and in turn allow you to appreciate the game on a much higher level. At least give it a shot.

well...
this game is one of few that i'll play forever, like black tiger, or double dragon, or rolling thunder, or gunlock/rayforce ( ehr)![]()
I really love the game, in case you didn't notice.
I'm also starting to play the arrange mode A, too. It's like an extra version ( those groovy rearranged versions taito did in the 80's of their games).
I hope this thread will get a good feedback.

I'm willing to give this a try, but I really dont get the scoring system. I watched the strategy vid in teh game from lv1 and I honestly dont understand how the cpu gets that high score. Also when using the shield, can u control the direction in which the absorbed bullets go?
Thanks in advance.

Absolutely. As a general rule, the released bullets will fling out in the opposite of whatever direction you push on with the D-Pad. Try absorbing a bunch of bullets and then moving in a large circular shape -- you'll actually be able to see the bullets trail behind your ship in a small white clump. Also when using the shield, can u control the direction in which the absorbed bullets go?
As a more specific rule, whatever side of your ship the absorbed bullets are on when you release the mosquito is the direction they'll shoot out from. This means you can use the mosquito in very short bursts and, in essence, bounce bullets right off your ship. Very cool stuff, and this also affords you maximum invulnerability with minimal risk, since the recovery time for your mosquito will be very short.
Also, if you bring the d-pad/stick dead center and release the mosquito, the absorbed bullets will fling out 360 degrees. This is a useful technique, but only in specific situations and if you've managed to absorb a fair number of bullets. All these mosquito techniques will allow you to bring in much more EXP cubes than would otherwise be possible.
Now, to bring in a high score, you'll be needing to accumulate as high a total "experience" count as possible. This number (displayed in the upper left-hand corner during play) serves as a passive multiplier in the background as you progress. Not only does it multiply basic enemy values, but it also increases the numbers of points received for your weaponry (main shot, piercing cannon, GHB) being in contact with larger foes. Your piercing cannon is not only much more powerful than your main shot, but rewards you with a lot more points for its use as well, so don't be conservative with it.
In order to reach that all-important high EXP count, you need to be familiar with the idea of 'chaining.' You will notice that upon destroying an enemy, golden cubes of varying size (the size denoting value) will often appear. It is your job to collect these before they descend toward the bottom of the screen and out of reach -- pretty basic stuff. These cubes serve a number of different purposes:
- Replenishing your Combo Gauge Meter
- Gaining Ship Levels
- Accumulating Shop Points
- Extending your Credit
- Passive Score Multiplier
- Making your life a living hell
In the upper-left hand corner, just below your total EXP read-out, is your Combo Gauge Meter. Each cube you collect fills the gauge a set amount; larger cubes will replenish your gauge substantially more than lower denomination cubes, but the rate at which they are collected will not affect this amount. Bear this in mind when trying to sustain your chain through particularly cube-barren areas. DDP players can think of this in much the same terms as the "GPS" meter, except that the CGM is sustained by collection of cubes and not strictly the destruction of enemies.
Grabbing another cube before your gauge reaches the bottom results in a chain. Creating a chain means that not only do you receive the points from the cube you've just collected, but the sum points of all cubes collected before as well. Chains are the basis for proficient scoring, and the mosquito your means of achieving them.
Hope this helps, and don't hesitate to ask if something is unclear.
Thanks alot for the great info Mode7, blinding!
I'll keep that in mind.
I hope I make it in the charts, coz those highscore make me dizzy
Cheers.

This is a lot of info to keep track of, but here you go.

Hmmmm.....I'm obvoiuslly doing something wrong if my scores are nowhere near everyone else despite the fact that I am getting just as far.
Scoring in Mars Matrix isn't so much about survival (though obviously it will help) but rather bringing in those large chains.Hmmmm.....I'm obvoiuslly doing something wrong if my scores are nowhere near everyone else despite the fact that I am getting just as far.
The in-game tutorials are an excellent place to start if you need some basic chaining pointers.
Yecky.
