Thread: Game Over?

  1. Time Out

I took a break once. It was around the time that 32X came out. I had little interest in picking that one up.... Then Saturn came out with it's sneak attack launch at that ungodly price, and for the first time I didn't have a brand new Sega console near when it came out. I coudl not keep up. I had some new interests... and I gradually lost interest in gaming for a while. Also, I must admit that the early 32-bit 3D games did not impress me very much (they still don't! hehe). But, eventually at one point I became more interested.......

What happened was I was going to be taking a flight on an airplane, and I was really nervous and bored. So, I went to the newsstand and the only thing I was marginally interested in was the gaming mags (i had not read any in a few years). So I bought too and I read them in the airports and on the plane. It was nice, like visiting with an old friend... So, by the time I landed I really wanted to get a Saturn so I could play Dark Saviour (eep!) and NiGHTS. Over the next few months I read up on some more games on the internet and became more and more interested. Eventually I got Saturn when Toys R Us put it on sale for $100 with 3 free games. I really enjoyed it, but I was not totally back yet. I was pretty casual. It was Dreamcast's godly goodness that ensured I was 100% back! Hook, line, and sinker, I probably own more DC games than any other console and it's my favourite system ever. Oh yeh, and I have to give some credit to NGPC as well. I love that lil guy as well.

Anyway, moral of the story is to go ahead and take a break. Maybe in the future the bug will bite you again and you'll feel like you never left. You might have to hunt for some classics you missed though, my list of Saturn games I didn't get is still pretty long!

    Best wishes and happy trails.

I hear you loud and clear, after Ikaruga all I'm looking forward to is GBA games. I've picked up the occasional Xbox/PS2 game out of a discount bin and have had plenty of money to buy a next gen system....I just really don't care to. Oh well, let whatever happens happen. Gaming may be stale to you now so dump it. Who knows, next year a title may respark your interest. Like everyone said, don't sell off your games right away, see how you feel with time. *-neo

  3. Really, that kind of myopic attachment to a particular console (the DC) isn't the same as loving to play video games. So, just give it up, and find a hobby you'll be open and fair-minded about.

  4. I dunno man, I still very excited about games, as ever before. Death of DC was sad, but it didnt made me stop liking the games, or created some kind of void. I only wish I had more time to actully play games

As for your situation, you definately need to take a break from gaming, pick up on something else, like reading, movies, or any other hobbies, and see how you feel.

I think Vagrant Story said it best (if it hasn't been done so already here):

    Evolve or die.

  6. I stopped playing videogames except on a casual basis after my sophomore year of high school, and didn't start playing again until after I finished my senior thesis in college.

My advice to people such as diffusionx is to take time off videogames, sell some (or most) of your stuff, and pick up another hobby for awhile. There are a thousand ways to spend your time that are more constructive than videogames. I once shared your opinion, so I know where you're coming from.

But for the love of God, if you're going to stop playing, DO IT. I don't need to be reminded in nearly every post of your ground-breaking epiphany that videogames don't really matter. Guess what? In a world of horrifying violence and strife such as ours, very few things matter save those that we choose to infuse with importance -- love, family, what have you. But whatever you choose to do, spare me the self-important blather.

  8. Actually along with this topic, I'm wondering how bad the news of Sega going *boom* affected people in general.

I actually feel the same way as Grasso, not so much that I'm this huge DC advocate, but because of what it implies about the industry, and its customer base.

That was just the last straw that broke the camel's back though, albeit a very big straw. 2D gaming is more or less gone now, on home systems at least. Strange though... despite me calling it quits as a gamer, I still follow the buzz and news as much as possible.
