    Awesome!!!

I was reading the year end issue of Entertainment Weekly a few weeks ago, and was pleased to see that "The Ring" did better at the box office than "8 mile". Not that they're similar movies or anything, but I'm glad America has better taste than I expected.

The Ring was my favorite movie of last year.

If this is true, then I can't wait for this DVD.
Well that's like, your opinion, man.

  3. the cover art for both discs aren't that great. why they didn't use the original theatrical cover is beyond anyone. and the jpn release could have gone with something less... boring ?

    WOAH...

How did this escape me? No one told me this was coming out! FUCK YES! Now I can ditch my shitty VCDs and get some decent subtitles!!!

Anyone have any more info on this?

Also, the cover to "The Ring" IS the poster, it just isn't the teaser poster. Although, I agree with you that just the balck background and Ring logo would've been better, but then, that's probably what the disc itself is gonna look like.

    EDIT:

After doing some digging, I found this over at ign:

Arriving on March 4th from Dreamworks is the recent horror remake of The Ring. The DVD will be pretty bare bones as it will only include a featurette titled "The Mystery of the Ring" and a trailer for the Japanese original that arrives on DVD the same day (titled Ringu in the US by Dreamworks).

The DVD will feature anamorphic widescreen video along with Dolby Digital 5.1 and DTS soundtracks. Hit the media section below for a high-res look at the cover.

If that's true, they better shit out a special edition of this badboy in time for the sequel, or I'll, I'll, ...cry

Seriously though, this film did really good at the box office, and I've seen much less sucessful films get a much better DVD treatment. LAME.

Despair, where'd you get your info?

  5. I think it was on Darkhorizons recently. I cant vouch it was real or not though.

  6. HOLY FUCK!

I just realized that the girl who played Samara is also Donnies little sister in "Donnie Darko"!

    How cool is that?

  7. Daveigh Chase also played Lilo in Lilo and Stitch.

i saw news about the dvds at fangoria first, and then it popped up over at dvdfile.com, with a full press report. but it's basically the same all around. bare bone discs with ugly cover art.

the teaser poster is the only poster i'd fully recognize. the other one is just so bleh. but i guess we gotta deal with it for now (hoping they change it before it's released). the disc art though would be great if it were the logo, it's just perfect not to be.

  8. mild spoiler ahead...

I saw this movie last week, and the overall story wasn't really that scary but little crazy girls do scare me.. I've seen the plot done just as well in a one hour X-Files episode. And it seemed like there was a ton of random stuff thrown in for the sake of making the movie weird... what was up with the fly? And the goopy stuff from the video?

The random stuff spliced into the film was cool... film overall was okay, but from all the hype I guess I had too high of an expectation...
    Name: Rock
    Town: Arcadia

  9. i was watching american idol (there's really nothing else on around that time) and at least twice through the show they had commericals that just had a ring on screen. then it disappears and a quick 3 word "review" pops up and fades out. the only thing that i could think of was that it had something to do with the dvds, but that's still a month out. don't know if any one else caught it and could throw some insight on it.

    Random huh? Hardly...

    From Ringworld:

As in the Japanese version, the video in the remake also seems to contain both concrete and abstract images.

    I. CONCRETE IMAGES. These represent: (1) scenes from Samara's own experience, (2) precognitive knowledge of events up to or after the time of her death, or (3) precognitive knowledge of events directly relating to Rachel's investigation / Samara being "freed" from the well.

The "ring" (sunlight shining through the cracks of the well) 1
Blood in the water (the horse jumping off the ferry and into the ocean) 3
The chair (either the one in the barn or the one in the institution) 1
Comb / sequence with the switching mirror (elaborated on in Ring 2) 1
Father in the window (recall that just below was the yard with Samara's swing) 1
Fly / scene of the cliff (fly on record room door / mother's suicide) 3/2
Shaking head covered in black plastic (Samara's own demise) 1
Lid sliding over the top of the well 1
Centipede (when Rachel is looking over Samara's file) 3
Horse's eye (same shot used in the scene on the ferry) 3
The ladder (the one in the barn, or the scene outside of Noah's apartment) 1/3
Dead horses on the shore 1
    Her mother's suicide 2
    The well 1

-The fly scene mentioned above is significant in that when Noah spies a fly on the door to the records room, it is moving in the same circular pattern as the one on the Samara tape. A minor detail for the viewer, but a relatively important one for Samara herself. Noah is about to learn of her background, and it is the first time in the movie that her name is spoken aloud. The fly also shares a possible connection to the abstract scene with the maggots (see below).

As for why events from the third category (from Rachel's investigation) appear on the tape, two reasons immediately spring to mind: (1) Samara saw the images in her mind, and they appeared unbidden on the tape; (2) They were deliberately inserted to feed Rachel's curiosity, convincing her to continue her investigation.

II. ABSTRACT IMAGES. Representing raw, unfocused emotion.

Fingers pierced by nail / severed fingers (pain Samara felt trying to claw out of the well)
"Tentacle" coming from the mouth (see notes below)
The burning tree (it appears as if on fire at sunset, but is truly on fire in the video)
    Maggots / writhing bodies

    notes

-The "severed fingers" scene consists of seven twitching fingers inside of a box. Theory: seven fingers for seven days, severed and twitching to represent pain, inside a box to represent being trapped in the well.

-Often confused for a piece of string, what Rachel actually coughs up is an old style electrode. Remember that Samara's goal is to make people suffer as she had, a phenomenon which also manifests itself in the seven day death sentence. The electrode, as well as the abstract "tentacle" image on the videotape, may be representative of the pain that Samara felt in being subjected to the numerous tests while at Eola County Psychiatric Hospital.

Others have theorized that the mouth belongs to a horse or a human / horse hybrid, and we are witnessing a representation of the pain that Samara inflicts on both. Yet another theory is that it resembles an umbilical cord, which would indicate either a pre-natal connection to the horses or the notion that watching the cursed video allows something to be born inside you (a nod, perhaps, to the original novels).

-Maggots are not only flies in the larval stage (which ties into the concrete image of the fly mentioned above), they are also found near death and decaying matter. Thus, the maggots may represent Samara's own death.

Considering that the maggots morph into a sea of writhing bodies, however, there is yet another conclusion we can draw: The maggots may be how she sees humanity, or be a representation of the death that she will deliver unto it.

-The only image from the Samara tape left unaccounted for (i.e. is it concrete or abstract) is the three-legged dog / goat. This may refer to either to the general malaise Samara brings to Moesko, the pain that she brings to all sentient things, or more obliquely to the genetic / mutation angle of the novel.

They did something very similar about 2 months ahead of the theatrical release, so I'd bet it IS about the DVDs.
