Tying your shoes is more complicated than installing a new drive in the DC.
If you just need a domestic DC, you may want to stop by your local EB (assuming you have one). Everytime I've stopped in, they've had a used DC or two all wrapped up for sale at a ridiculously low price ($45-$60). DC for a the price of a game? A safe bet in my book.

***UPDATE***
Alright I've located the problem. It seems inside the gd rom, the laser keeps going forward because its not getting the signal that it was in its "home" position. when it keeps pushing it forward it goes back a notch (because its on a screw type system) and makes the clicking noise i was describing. So either the mechanism that tells the dreamcast that the laser is in the "home" position is broken, or there is a weak connection between something.
I'm gonna put the thing back together again and see if it works. (sometimes that does fix something if you diddle with it) and if not I'm gonna try to re-solder some points and see if that does anything. If worse comes to worse I'll get it repaired or buy a new GD Rom.
Anyone ever done this type of stuff before?
And BTW sorry for my lack of terms because i only 14 and I havent been taught this stuff yet :-/
***UPDATE.... AGAIN***

OK, OK, lets get back ON topic
There is this excellent outfit in Maryland that does console repairs. I can't recommend them enough (they installed an Afterburner and TV De in my GBA for free).

Fuck them... don't give them your buisness.
Damn straight. They're fucking thieves. They were charging $700 for PS2s before they came out in the US, and I can remember when they were selling Virtual Pro Wrestling 2 for over $100. Don't give them your money.Originally posted by 88mph

In the Baltimore area, Powergamer is much better. I dunno any import shops in the DC area.
