  1. Regarding the single stream at the end of 1-4, I have to say that I think it's actually better than using the double stream. Although the single stream is thinner, it seems to be more powerful (well, with autofire anyway). I find that sometimes the double stream doesn't "cut" through enemies quite as fast or effectively for that section. Not that I can chain six rows like WIZ, but I have nailed the Flick of Doom™ twice in the past, but I had to be white to do it rather than black (against the black enemies). The opposite colour makes chaining it much easier, but then you don't absorb sufficient energy to homing attack the rest.

Hope that all made sense. It did while I was typing it...

Im not the authority of course, we all have our own ways of playing the game, and as long as it works no strategy is necessarily "better" than the other.

Chris is correct. Now, the single stream isn't more powerfull (or else it would be used on bosses and everything else )

When shooting for the 134 chain in Chapter 1, it requires you to quickly move from right to left, destroying ALL black drones. When using the double stream, it seems that starting fire and moving causes a gap. This will mess you up, because it will miss one or more black drones.

Trust me, I've done it both ways, and now that I'm using auto-fire Single stream, I have not messed up once.

Are there any other sections of the game you don't understand why the Single stream is being used?

btw - You can just use fast single shots (with your finger) for the two lines of drones in 3-2 while the mini-boss is chasing you. It is much more reliable then using the Regular Vulcan.

  3. Sorry about that, I don't think I made myself clear enough about what enemies I was referring to.

When I said "criss-crossing enemies" I meant the 2 lines of enemies that constantly come down the center of the screen in 1-4... on the appreciate DVD, he uses the single stream quite often there, whereas I usually get along fine with just holding the button down.

If I can find a reliable host i'll set up some videos of my runs so you can watch in amazement at my amazing l33tness... or laugh at my terrible tactics, either one.

EDIT: On that note actually, does anybody know how I could directly connect my TV/GC to my PC to record a game onto my computer? Balancing a camera in front of a TV is extremely inefficient.

I'd like to know how you are using auto-fire to get rapid single stream, since the button config doesn't allow for an extra fire button.

I recently picked up the Sega Virtua Stick(HSS-0136, for Saturn) which has auto-fire capabilities, but if I set it to auto fire, then normal shot couldn't be used without flicking the switch off in-game.

Really now that I've tried it, it's not that important to me, but I'm curious to know how/if it can be done practically.

  5. Matt modded my stick. I'm using the bottom left two buttons for regular play. When I flip a switch, the top left button (right above) mirrors the bottom left button (fire) with auto-fire.

  6. Ah, I see. But do you have to flip the switch every time or can you just leave it on and your bottom buttons function normally?

  7. I just leave it switched on (which turns on auto-fire and mirror). It only affects the top-left button

  8. **cough**

    nice one Chris

Very true. Alot of the hardest parts of 3-2 are all about effectively using the single shots.

    Congrats again ChrisM-UK!

  12. Great work ChrisM! Congratulations!!!!

    That makes 3 now?

  13. I think plecak was talking about 3 players on the GameFAQs board with scores over 30 million. Previously it was just Snap, but now Jason and myself have done it too.

Any reason why your scores aren't posted there, mate?

EDIT: How rude of me! I should thank both of you for the praise! Thanks, guys!

I didn't even notice Jason. It looks like there are a few more people who are ready to break through the 30 million barrier too!

I guess I could. Though this scoreboard is where I first started, and I think I'll end here too, one day.

Ah, such humble beginnings. I remember those days... when a score of 20 million was considered by most to be elite!

I actually didn't post my scores anywhere until I hit over 10 million and got onto the NetRanking. Then I set up shop on GameFAQs. The topic with my first score has long since been deleted... the oldest Challenge mode password I still have is for 12,683,960.

    Happy days...

  16. Incredibleness Chris! The big 30mil finally cracked.... excellent work!

I myself havent played for weeks since I started my new job... which shall soon change this weekend.... im gonna spend some quality time with the 'Ruga

  17. Get back into the game, buddy... you'll never catch me otherwise...

In other news, my score keeps creeping:

    ChrisM-UK / 30,245,030 / A / 186

    The breakdown:

    Chapter 1: 3,952,260 (126 Chain)
    Chapter 2: 5,713,260 (186 Chain)
    Chapter 3: 5,315,790 (146 Chain)
    Chapter 4: 6,658,620 (178 Chain)
    Chapter 5: 5,027,800 (070 Chain) <----- Urk!

Below my average scoring, but it was a no-death run. Perhaps I'll hit 31 sooner than I thought...

TATE is my new best friend!

EDIT: Eek! It combined my posts! I've added a dividing line.

Nice work Chris! I managed a score of 26.7 million last night. I think I've fully regained my form now, so hopefully I'll be seeing some improvements in the next couple days. It sure has taken me long enough to shake off all the rust.

  19. Excellent stuff, mate! Watch your back, Jx2...

I'm in the middle of finals now, so Jx2 can probably relax for a few more days. But I am getting closer to beating my old score. If I wouldn't quit after each time I make a mistake in the first 2 1/2 chapters...

  21. Me too Jugem. Finals be damned.

    4,546,170 Chapter 3 Max 92 Chain

Good, now that I'm back on the list I can stop playing until someone passes me.

  23. #533
I've gone back to playing a little hard mode, and managed a score of 4,140,430 (66) in chapter 2. Still need to work a little on it, but I did learn how to pull the 44 chain method off in 2-1 (in hard mode). It requires a lot of crazy bullet dodging!

  24. Jugem, the thought of a hard mode 44 chain almost literally fries my brain!

Still plugging away at Normal mode, myself, although I've been tinkering with Prototype lately. On my way to nailing the 3-2 bonus enemies (before the boss), which should take my Ch 3 score over 6.2 million.

All I'd have to do then is stick it in a real run...

  25. I'm back!

Ive just come back from a training course for my job in London... an Ikaruga-less training course regretfully.

But still, im back now, and im going to set my precious GC up and huddle in a corner for 4 hours to get back into the flow. Methinks ive got some catching up to do.

    Congratulations on all new scores!

  26. #536
So you're still going for more on normal, eh Chris? Hope you break the 31M mark soon. I've become dedicated to hard mode now, so I guess I won't be passing you anytime soon Jx2. I have improved my chapter 2 hard mode score to 5,066,970 (163).

So you are telling me my 23498329048234 hours of practice of 1-4 could of been avoided if I had an autofire button!?

Seriously though, it is a shame there isnt a way around this, I find doing the flick of doom horribly inconsistent even with all the practice I have had on it.

So much so, that whenever I do normal runs, I just forego the chain it gives me because it just isnt worth the risk.

  28. Now, now, I still think the answer was given by the very first S++ video that Treasure released. Flick of Doom: hard as hell, AND useless.
(and no, I'm not saying this because I've messed up each and every attempt to do it)
    (Ok, maybe a little)

  29. Any one know where I can get this game (GC) for cheap, and by that I mean $20 and below?

  30. I don't even mess with the six rows at all, I figure I'll make up for it on Chapter 3...maybe.
