The Final Fantasy Games that never made it to America

Alright than the Japenese Final Fantasy 2 + 3 never made it to the states correct? Only the re-numbered 2 + 3 and eventually 5.

Has anyone played either of them? And how do they compare storywise and Gameplay wise to the current FF's, or even the SNES ones.

Does part FF 2 Japenese version have some sort of FAQ? I'm still debating wether or not to import the FF 1+2 Premium pack. Though somewhere I read that FF 2 was the black sheep of the pack.

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

  2. We have more or less seen the best FFs that were made for Nintendo systems (no, anything after 6 does not count as a "best FF", don't even bring that argument here). Five is said to be pretty good, but not as good as 4 or 6. There *is* a hacked ROM translation of 5 in additon to a legit translation of 5 for one of the PSX re-releases, so it has seen play over here. It's my understanding that 2 and 3 are rather unremarkable, but I've not played them.

  3. There were rom translations of 2 & 3 online, they were among the first done, not suprisingly. I played them and they are extremely similar to the first Final Fantasy, no real advances graphically, the only real difference is more of a storyline in them.

You can get the translations here:

But I won't point you out to any places where the ROM or an emulator are because that would be "evil" and is generally frowned-upon by may of the board patrons
    omg TNL epics!

Yes, if that indeed does happen it would make a fantastic Square send-off to the PSX. Unless they also brought over Tobal 2 as well.

    Hey, I can dream can't I?
    omg TNL epics!

  7. I've played through FF2 Nes, and it suffers from the most asinine power up method there is. Basically, your party gains new stats from either getting hit or attacking more. Attacking increases strength; getting will increase HP. The problem is the enemies will single out one person for every fight, leaving everyone else underpowered unless you cheat(sorta) and do what I did. I beat on my own guys for hours to raise stats, but even then you have to get your guys to critical before an increase. Magic functions the same way; you get one point each time a spell is used, 100 and it levels up. You can already tell magic is fucking useless. Aside from those, its pretty much exactly like FF1. FF3 Nes from what I played seems to have a job system, but its been so long and I didn't like it. I actually prefer the fan translation of FF5 than the one Square did, if that tells you anything.

  8. 2 is pretty much the first SaGa game, and as Lordmrw said, it has some real problems. I haven't played more than a half an hour of 3, because the translation I found was really screwed up. I never bothered trying to find another one.

I didn't like 2 much, but 3 was a lot of fun. Definitely the best of the 8-bit FFs.

  10. I played half-way through a translation of FF3 "back in the day". I loved that game. excellent battle music, and , while not much in the way of a story, the situations you were put in were pretty creative. Job System was cool. my .. . "scholar" X_x. . .the one that attacks with the books was my most powerful person.
