Thread: Dragon Quest 8

  1. Dragon Quest 8

"With Nintendo recently placing an ad in a Japanese magazine citing a big announcement in December, rumors of Dragon Quest 8 hitting the system exclusively would definitely be a HUGE coup for the system (in Japan)." -PGC

Enix has stated since day one that the next dragon quest would be released on the system with the biggest userbase. Obviously, that is the PS2.

Has anyone seen that ad that Nintendo placed? With getting rid of Rare and all, the big N sure has cash to spend, so I wouldn't rule out Nintendo getting the rights to DQ8. And with MS spending money like its going out of style, i woulnd't rule them out either.

Anyone care to speculate about which platform the most important game(in japan) will land on, and what impact it will have? I think its a very interesting situation myself.

Thats it. Chances are that enix will earn more profits from the sales of this game on a system with a larger userbase than what Nintendo would be able to pay for DQ 8 exculsivity.

It makes me nervous with all this talk about company A buying out company B. Still I'm not too worried because I doubt Enix wants to cut the amount of product it could sell.

Then again, where ever Enix goes, so do the gamers.

    At least in Japan.

Man, if Nintendo DOES successfully pull this off, it will be as big a coup as Sony landing Square was back in '97. Square and Enix games probably move more systems than any other 3rd party software in Japan. If Nintendo could score exclusive rights to the next Dragon Quest game, hell, forget the Resident Evil license, this would propel them way up the sales charts in Japan!
    omg TNL epics!

Well, OK. Here's a review of what I think matters:

(Living under cave check: DQ7 did sell 4 million+ in Japan. Total sales in US to date? Almost 160,000. Almost. Projected was 1 million.)

Heartbeat, the development studio that has been the main force behind DQ since 3 has went fallow and appearently on bitter terms. Whatever comes out, it's not from them.

Manabu Yamana, one of the main programmers of Enix/J (and of DQ), was lured away by Yamauchi's FundQ and now heads Brownie Brown. They're making GBA and I think GC games now.

Yuji Hori, Koichi Sugiyama, and Akira Toriyama are all still around. So, the core still DQ people are still with Enix.

Enix has 14 PS2 titles released or upcoming in total, including games such as Star Ocean 3.

The "highest user base" quote that was mentioned earlier is the only piece of information that has been said so far. The current score world wide is PS2 40 mil, GC 10, XB 5(? 7?).

Based on all this, it seems logical that it will be a PS2 game, but either way it'll be a very different DQ than before. If it does turn out to be GC or XB I'd love to hear their reason why ^^. It will also prompt a system purchase out of me, personally, should they choose a console other than PS2. At least I know I can put it off until 2004

  6. i put this under hey you never know could happen

and i do think itll be a huge system seller in Japan

and i could have sworn DQ7 sold more than 4 million units in japan could have sworn i read somewhere that it was the PSX's largest seller ever in japan

so if Nintendo does score DQ8 i think itll be huge for them

i mean shit they scored RE and no one thought that would ever happen
    Where I play

  7. Yuji Horii, DQ's scenario writer was interviewed in the Nov. '01 EGM (i think that was the issue) about DQ 7 on PSX and DQ in general. When asked about the possibility of DQ on another system he said (quote not verbatim) "We won't force our fans to buy another system to enjoy the next DQ game." Do the math. GC will get a DQ Monsters title and will be lucky to get anything else exclusive from Enix on GC.

Oh yeah and Planet Gamecube is a bunch of morons who have yet to accurately predict a major secret game release at my last count. Let's look at their "story" which spawned this thread:

""With Nintendo recently placing an ad in a Japanese magazine citing a big announcement in December, rumors of Dragon Quest 8 hitting the system exclusively would definitely be a HUGE coup for the system (in Japan)." -PGC"

"Oh wow! Attention PGC readers! Nintendo put a vague teaser about a secret game in a Japanese magazine. MAYBE it's Dragon Quest? I mean, they didn't even say if it was from a third party or themselves, it could be F-Zero online for all we know and we have absolutely no proof or inside sources that could/would confirm this but you never know."

Let's hope they at least do a slight upgrade in the visuals department...I mean, I'm no graphics whore and I do have the occasional hankerin' for that retro look but wouldn't some hi-res 2-d stuff in a 3'd environment fit nicely into the dragon quest series...especially if they still have Toriyama doing the character designs?

Maybe the next DQ will be multi-platform? Perhaps Nintendo will even pay Enix to release it first on the NGC, with the PS2 version to follow a few months later?

BTW, I was just playing DW7 last night. It's a good game and all, but it was not very intuitive - I really needed the strategy guide. I don't know when the Japanese version was released, but the U.S. version was released very late in the PSOne's lifespan, so comparing the sales here and there may be apples and oranges.

I agree. I\'m not a graphics whore by any stretch of the imagination, but come on, DW7\'s graphics are quite ugly. The 2D games on the SNES and PSX look much, much better.

  10. Ehh. The Japanese version was released a couple years ago. Still gamers over there sure love their DQ, and I think it would sell just as well right now.

I think the chances of it being multi-platform are slim to none really. I don't really have any kind of knowledge of coding, but that would have to be a nightmare to do.
