Thread: Metal Gear Solid 3 - Only on Xbox

  1. That Splinter Cell article made me even *less* interested in playing the game. First off, while I may be quick to judge, there doesn't seem to be anything NEW being done. Those amazing motion detector bombs? Sounds like the trip bombs from Duke Nukem 3D. OMG, night and thermal vision?! Stealth!!??? Running, jumping, climbing, sliding, crouching, and peeking? Insane...

    Everything sounds like Metal Gear Solid 2 with nice lighting. There was nothing that was described that blew me away. And, as StriderKyo pointed out, the article just hyped the game so much while giving so few justifications that I will probably just overlook this game.

    I'll give this game another chance when I read about it from someone who can give me something worthwhile to be excited about...
    There are many positive impressions from other sites. I only posted that because of convenience. Stealth action games involve using stuff like motion sensitive bombs, night vision, lockpicking, running, climbing, and the way you go about doing them is quite well done.
    Eg. using thermal vision to see which buttons were recently pressed on a keypad by a guard to know what the code is and then entering that code to unlock things. Or when picking a lock, using the virbration of the controller and through sound and vibration feedback on the controller, you actually FEEL the tumblers click and stop, and you physically pick the lock. Or blowing a fish tank to electrify the water on the floor to take out several guards in one shot. It's just plain cool to use stuff like this, and many people don't find it boring which is why they must be mentioned in an impressions post.
    To me it's the attention to detail and the overall feeling you get when you play a game, that is overlooked. The graphic and lighting dynamics adds to the overall feeling of you being an operative. You must use stealth, you cannot be seen. And everything depends on whether guards see your shadow and the noise you make. Duke 3d didn't have those little details now did it? I've played thief, MGS1&2 before and despite stuff not being new, I am still excited to play the game.

  3. Everything in the game is in full 3-D, and made out of polygons.
    That comment right there made me disregard that article completely.

    That said, I think Splinter Cell looks and sounds great, and will most likely be a much better stealth game then MGS2 was (but MG has the story). Mainly because MGS2 could be played Rambo-style, it was possible to ignore the stealth aspects for most of the game. SC seems to not really be that, but it also looks to have a better focus on the different ways to kill. And I like that.

  4. If a movie franchise like the Bond movies can last as long as it has, which perplexes me, then FF will last just as long.
