Unlike many people here, I want the video game industry to expand and attract new people. I want video games be something everyone does for entertainment, like watching movies or listening to music. The more variety of gamers there are, the more diverse game development will be.
In order for this to happen, gaming needs just as many female gamers as males. What do you think would attract more female gamers?
I think women need to be targeted in advertising. Sometimes people just need to be told what they want. Dance games are popular with girls so why not advertise games like Space Channel 5 in girls' magazines?
To attract more women gamers, there needs to be more games designed with them in mind. Current "girl gamers" often scoff at the idea that girls need separate games but I really think that these people have to realize that their tastes are not the majority.

To be really honest I don't think there's anything that could be done that hasn't done already.
Pretty much we all just have to wait for the Baby Boomers to die, so then finally the mass media won't have any reason to angle videogames as kiddie-crap, which therefore won't make videogames seem stupid to the teeniebopper-hivemind... and from there all she needs to do is find the right game and keep playing it until the realization comes along of "Wait a minute; unlike TV, this isn't boring!" and the circle is complete.
Also, I propose that Ethugg should make a thread where only Ethugg can post. Anyone else that attempts to de-Ethugg the Ethugg thread shall be banned.

To expand the market, I think developers need to try to make some intelligent games. Have well written stories that rival those of novels or books. Actually say something about the human condition instead of trying to impress the same teenage japanese kids over and over again. Grab the attention of the nation with something besides how shocking the game is or how many units it sold.
