Title: Pirate Cove Survivor- Sign Up Here!
Post by: CafeDave on 02/19/03 at 09:55 PM
Good news!  Thanks to at least some positive feedback, I have decided to run a Pirate Cove Survivor competition.  It will be similar to the original Tropico Survivor and the famous TV Survivor series.  Here are the rules for signing up and for the contest:

1. Contestants must pick a pirate to sponsor from a total of up to 16 pirates.  These may include the pirates in Pirate Cove or another favourite pirate if you prefer.  A pirate may also be sponsored by a team of more than one person so you can compete together.  Choices will be first come - first served and by posting in this thread only.  The contest will start once 16 pirates are chosen.  To sponsor a pirate, you must be a registered member of this forum.

2. Pirates will be divided into two "tribes" of 8 pirates each.  I will post the teams and hopefully some biographies for each in a new page.  You can also personalize your pirate with some favourites and facts if you like.  See the Amazon Survivor page (http://www.cbs.com/primetime/survivor6/) for examples.  You may either post them here or email to me once you have registered your sponsorship here.

3.  Each week there will be an immunity challenge consisting of some game or puzzle to compete in.  Mostly this will be some form of online game accessible to all.  (PopCap games is a site I definitely intend to use.  If you have other suggestons for games or challenges, please email them to me, do not post them here.)  You will be competing against members of your own tribe for high score instead of for the whole tribe.  The highest score from each tribe will be immune from being ejected from the island for that week.

4. Voting will be by two weekly polls, one for each tribe.  The contestant with most votes against will be removed, unless they have won the challenge and gained immunity.  In that case, the next highest vote will be ejected.  So one contestant from each tribe will be ejected each week, for a total of seven weeks, then the final decision will be by vote only for the eighth week.

5. Non-contestants may also participate by competing in a challenge and "ransoming" your favourite pirate by substuting your score for that contestant.  Only one ransom per pirate will be allowed.

6. The final pirate surviving will win the fame and notoriety of being the sole survivor of Pirate Cove Survivor!  (Sorry I can't offer any other prizes, but maybe someone will offer some free prizes or something... hint, hint.   ;D  )

That's it for rules until I think of more.  You may start signing up now.  Here's a list of the Pirate Cove Captains.  An exhaustive list of many other pirates can be found at the Swashbuckler's Cove Pirate Biographies (http://www.aschulze.net/pirates/pirates.htm).  (Thanks to 'Bean for finding that site.  8) )  I will update this list with the sponsors as they come in:

Here is the list to date:

Cap'n Hook - beeman5
Charlotte de Berry - muttbunch
Henry Morgan - Railnut, skeebercat
Gunpowder Gertie - Coffeebean, Morticcia

I'll take Charlotte De Berry, just because I've grown kind of attached to her from the demo (and she kicks Black Bart's butt all day long :))

I'll sponsor Henry Morgan.

I agree, Charlotte De Berry  :-* is much better than Black Bart in the demo. And I ran that demo through hundred times playing with the game mechanics.

I'd like to sponser Gunpowder Gertie, aka  Gertrude Imogene Stubbs. You can read about her at the Swashbuckler's Cove site.
I wasn't here for the first Cafe Survivor contest, but this sounds like fun! ;D

Id like to sponsor Grace O'Malley.

She isn't in the list, but she's my favourite pirate, that's OK right?

Hey Bean!  I see Gunpowder Gertie was a Canadian immigrant from England.  And her father a train engineer.  You know how to pick 'em!  I love the name of her gunboat, the "Tyrant Queen".   :D  Grace O'Malley has quite the story too.  This is very interesting.

Yup, quite the story.  But she and I have personal connections too (well sort of) My parent's got married at the castle on Clare Island  :D

You can sponser a pirate already picked and be in a team. I'm quite happy to have other people sponser Gunpowder Gertie. The more the merrier! ;D

I thought sponsors had to compete?  I'm not sure I would be able to compete.  :(  However, if sponsors provide advertisment and stand in as cheerleaders, then Gertie's definitely got my cutlass!  :) ;D :D ;D

Although I'm very new to these forum things I hope I will learn fast. I am glad to see John Galt ans Estio joining arms with Ragnar Danneskjöld!

There we go!

Hey Tish, competing is optional but recommended if you want to avoid getting the boot early.  But if Bean is willing to take on co-sponsors/cheerleaders, that's great!  Teams may have an advanatage if more than one player competes and boosts the score higher than an individual could.

I may be new here, but I'm up to the challange.  I'll sponsor Edward Teach.

Edit: Sorry, changing my backing.  I'm going to have to sponsor Guybrush Threepwood.

Yeh! We only need a few more. ;D

Welcome aboard Jebus.

Welcome aboard Jebus.

Thanks.   :)

I haven't been around here very long, but from what I've noticed you all seem like a good group of people.  I used to occasionally check the forums for other games I play (mainly for Command & Conquer: Generals), but they all seem to degenerate into flame wars and name calling, as opposed to actually solving problems.  It doesn't seem to be the same here.  Someone posts a question and everyone actually tries to help that person answer it.  It makes reading the boards useful and fun.  ;D

Yay!

"I'm Guybrush Threepwood, and I'm a Mighty Pirate"

i love those games, classics, true classics.

Post by: Stoertebecker on 03/06/03 at 06:57 AM
Hi, can I sponsor my nick  ???

After all, he is listed on the swashbuckler webpage:

Klaus Störtebeker

Klaus Störtebeker (Nikolaus Storzenbecher) lived in the 14th century. His name means "a beaker at a gulp" after the practice of requiring crew members to drink a huge beaker of beer in one gulp to join crew. He operated in the North and Baltic Sea, his ship's name was the Bunte Kuh (The Colorful Cow).
Störtebeker and Godeke Michels were leading groups of freebooters (also called Vitalienbrüder or Likendeeler), who captured Danish ships during the war by order of the Germans. The freebooters were breaking the blockades and supplying besieged cities with food and ammunition, after plundering those goods from Danish merchant ships. However, the pirates soon did not only plunder Danish ships, but also the ships of England, Holland, Prussia and the German Hanse itself. The damage done by the pirates soon was so great, that 1395 Margarete from Denmark and the German Hanse decided to make peace and take appropriate measures against the pirates.

During those actions against piracy a momentous accident happened in 1396: The fleets of Denmark and the German Hanse took each other for the wanted pirates and decided to shoot first and then scrutinize the identity of the enemy. The great battle was won clearly by the German Hanse. The astonishment was great as they figured out the real identity of the foe. The shocked fleet captains retreated silently with their ships and what was left of them to their home ports.

1401 Klaus Störtebeker and 71 of his companions were caught near Helgoland Island by a treacherous trick: A fisherman, whom Störtebeker warranted protection and allowed him to sail beneath his high stern, turned out to be the enemy in disguise. The supposed fisherman pretended to cook a meal in the lee, but he melted lead instead. He then poured the liquid lead into the rudder eyelet and thus rendered the ship disabled.

In October 1401, as Klaus Störtebeker was kneeling in front of the executioner on the Grasbrook (a tiny isle in the river Elbe in Hamburg, Germany), he was trying to buy freedom for himself and his men by offering a golden chain that should reach all around Hamburg. But the executioner showed no mercy. Legend says that Störtebeker made another deal: All those companions should be reprieved, who he could manage to walk by after being beheaded. This way he saved the lives of eleven pirates before the malicious executioner tripped him. After the pirates were decapitated their heads were spiked on poles and lined up at the river Elbe as a determent. Only six months later Godeke Michels was captured together with his 80 companions and also beheaded in Hamburg.
The valor and pride of Störtebeker was so legendary that soon many northern German cities claimed to be the home of Klaus Störtebeker, greatest of the Vitalienbrüder and leader of the Likendeelers. The immeasurable treasure of Klaus Störtebeker - a pirate who was feared from London to Novgorod - was never found.
However, nowadays Störtebeker's treasure has already been lifted in another way along the German coastline. The famous pirate had to relinquish his name to numerous pubs, streets and festivals. Even some varieties of schnapps carry his name.

This German melody is made from a historical church song by Walter Göttke in 1924:

Exact English Translation:

Klaus Störtebecker is our master
advised by Godeke Michels!
Shoot through the waves like storm, just faster
The Flying Dutchman's godfather
Gaffer is the ships goblin
Let's tackle, crew!
Life is bauble!
We are the hell of Helgoland
Our sanguineous flag is cracking the mast
Rats scurrying on the floor
A skeleton is our guest
On the sail there are strange shadows
The mermaid is swimming in our wake
Laugh, crew!
Life is bauble!
Still ruling is the hell of Helgoland

And when our ship makes its last run
Laugh while like a coffin she goes down
We die an ancient pirate's way
Today we fight, tomorrow we drown
In green algae and white sand
Land ho, crew, land!
Life is bauble!
Such dies the hell of Helgoland

Note: Helgoland is a tiny pirate island in the German North Sea.

Thx,

KS

Now I know why Morticcia is called deitess. Merciless she puts her finger (cutlass ?) on all our mistakes... ;D
Or was that due to the fine nose of that guy from your signature ?

"Bunte Kuh" was the Ship that captured Störtebecker.
His own ship was the "Seetiger" (Seatiger)

That happens if one is to fast with plundering websites (e.g. cut(lass), copy, paste(ry))

I will ask the author to correct that, otherwise he will walk the plank ;D

I'm not sure if she was actually pointing out mistakes or, if like a lot of us, she just thought the name "The Colorful Cow" was funny.

Sorry Sto, but Jebus is correct.  And tho Mooski is our resident cow now, the original cow, aka the walking milkshake, is Chris.  Seeing the name of that ship made me think of funny times.

And being contunely  :P prone to his own brand  :P of mistakes, Chris would never ever make fun of anyone else for their own.   :)

I rarely, if ever, make fun of posters who I don't know (relative to the nature of online relationships) well.  Nor am I well versed in the arcana of any subject, including piracy.
