I am playtesting this new scenerio, but darned if I know what I am doing....   I am used to keeping the people happy, not locking them down with no elections and stuff.... This is a huge island too, not one of the little ones I am used to.... It has 3 distinct population centers at the very start -- plus a mining outpost.

Whoa!!! I like the look of this island Brf. With the amount of space available there is plenty of room for repression. Grin

The SS gives a good grounding as to where the island can go and there seems plenty of avenues for tyrants to choose from.

Ok......this is preliminary release.

There are no winning or losing conditions, so I imagine it is open ended so far. I was testing this edition and got up to the mid-70s, when suddenly the game crashed to desktop during a rebel attack.

This version has no special events so far, although I have plans for many... I am just seeing whether I am on the right track for a backdrop for the militarists in this club. There are a couple of special on-going conditions which are explained at the end of the introduction. I have been fine-tuning them with my testing and I think they are working to expectations.

If Mr.P and el_malo will try it out....we will see if my basic premise is in line...

Sorry to say, I don't think el_malo will be back.

You might catch up to him at his site...   (Just click on the link in his sig)

Btw, thanks again Brf!   Your scenarios have been a major bonus for me, and all of us, here at the Cafe.   Your generous sharing of maps has kept many of us addicted to this silly little game for way too long.

Keep it up!   Please!    Grin

Well I've finally got round to testing this!  Since 1967 I've had a score of 290 and over $50k Swiss so I just need that little extra shove but can I get it. Can I heck.  My military happiness is around 70%.  They're already the highest paid by far - and have the best housing.  How does one improve this?  My teamsters are no problem by the way.  My money is coming from tourism and the gold mines.

I assume you are running the version that is posted on my webpage....full of events and stuff.

I never had much tourism in my tests. My extra cash came from cigars.

To get that extra nudge in military respect you need to build several army bases and keep the modernization edict running. If you play the events correctly, the police will have 90+ respect at the end. If you hire a bunch of police they will bring up the military respect total.

Yes I am, andl I did manage to get the mil resp up to over 90 and a top score of 293 but then everything - Swiss, total score all went downhill, so it was back to below square one! Didn't think about the modernisation edict (shows I dont often play military scenarios) so I'll try putting that in earlier and see how I do.  I destroyed the church and all the northen stuff as well to reduce the number of civilians as well as firing all the builders but I still obviously hadn't a high enough ratio - the terrorisation effect was just under 50.

In my winning game the suppression factor was only about 40. Part of the score is based on Suppression  X Civilian population, so keeping the population low is counter-productive. The army wages can drain your Swiss account quickly in the later parts of the game, so you need to expand your mining business to keep it full.

O/K Brf now I got it Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin (that's five stars)!

$56k Swiss and 397 points but I didn't get a win recorded!! Huh Huh Huh ?

So why not - are you heartless??

I also haven't got a programme that will convert my Paint save to jpeg so it's got to be a download - perhaps you can convert if I've established a world record? A friends done me one for my new scenario which I'm only a couple of steps away from completion! But I dont like to ask him too often.

You havent reached retirement yet. You have to hold on to all that Swiss Cash until February 1990. I have a new version posted on my website, but I didnt anticipate someone getting that high that quickly.

Hi Brf

With my new computer and now being able to download scenarios I played this (and other scenarios I haven't won) again and got there in 1966 no problem. However after that it got tough around 1975 when my soldiers (despite huge pay etc) revolted. Hadn't put in the military modernisation edict which may not have helped.

I also don't know whether I have your latest - the zip is - Return toG Oct 2003 - if there's a later version can you either repost it here or give a link to your website (lost all my favs and can't trace it) - or email it to me of course. If the one on Teamstars site is later I can get it from there. One my version it doesn't say anywhere that its a 40 year scenario.

Yup. I moved on to other things. The one there on my website is my latest version.
One big problem with soldier scenerios is that they reduce liberty, which is one of the thigs they want... to they end up lowering their own happiness.

I am pretty sure with army bases and military modernization you should do fine.

Well - he was here a few days ago in this thread
http://www.the-nextlevel.com/tropico/cafe/index.php?topic=6250.0
That was one of the reasons I made this one up.

Let's transfer a few posts from that thread for background.

OK Brf, the challenge is on you to script a scenario that allows Mr.P and the rest of the militarists, to indulge in their favorite past-time - turning the thumb-screws.
What you want? Just one that requires a certain size of army and zero liberty to win?

My thoughts on a "militarist" scenario (I'm sure Mr.P will have some too).
1.   The infrastructure, population and economy should be more developed than is normal at the start.
2.   The primary scoring should be related to the army and police. (a % of the overall population?)
>a.  Size of the armed forces would be one factor.
>b.  How effective gov't control of the island is would be another.
>c.  Number of dead rebels should be worth something. (Also a score for those killed by the gov who were not rebels, or died in prison. Can that be done?)
3.   The size of El Prez's Swiss Bank Account is a factor.
4.   There should be a main urban area (capital) and several minor urban areas.
...
Oh yeah, one other thing, it should have lots of events both good and bad.

I can count the number of rebels, tell if a particular unit is a rebel and spawn new rebels, but I cannot count how many you have killed.
There is a counter called KilledByEdict, which I assume counts the Eliminations.
I can count the current number of prisoners, but not how many have died.
How "effective" government control is has to be quantified. I am not sure how it would be measured unless it is by counting soldiers and police and crime-safety or something -- maybe subtracting for coups or uprisings or something. I don't think there is a "Average government control" number, although I know you can see the control overlay on the map. oh yeah, there is one called AveStabilityOfPower. I will have to see what is in that.

... Anyway I'll play your Military scenario when it comes up Brf; but it's my least favourite type because all that seems to matter is numbers.  If you can have more military than the opposition you win so it's just balancing income against military cost.  No tactics involved.  So if I want a military type game I play Age of Empires or some such. ...

... Actually, it won't be strictly a military scenerio. You will have to run your economy under a military regime, without Liberty to make them happy. It should take some micro-managing to take care of the troublemakers.
Since this one is so unlike my other ones, it will take a lot of testing to get all the pieces to work.
The requesters also asked for a bunch of scripted events. I have done those before ... so I know how to do them. The trick is think up some appropriate ones -- to create a storyline.

Oh my word! A Story Line? What will they think of next?

Return to Glory -- A prelude

I Manuel Torres, the business loan officer at the First Bank of AguaCate, was on my way in to work on a crisp January morning when I heard gunshots. A skirmish was on at the Presidential Palace!

As I approached, I saw my co-worker, Carlos, surrounded by the Presidential Guards. who were confronting an invading army.

"You cannot do this! Your brother has made a peaceful and prosperous regime!", Carlos interjected.

"Your decadent, Capitalistic, rule will never take this island. Your bank is closed."

I gaped in horror as he and the guards were gunned down in cold blood. I looked to my right and saw the children... who would now be scarred for life.

Actually this AAR is a teaser for the scenerio I am working on. When the scenerio starts, all you see is the pile of soldiers, with the banker on the bottom. On one of my tests I was panning back to buy my initial stuff and noticed the banker and the children standing there. Serendipity. Also, when you take the game off pause, the banker, Manuel, turns tail and runs to the clinic and throws on a doctor smock over his business suit.
