I'm having a bit of trouble getting a game going in sandbox mode.

I can't seem to make any gold, and I can't seem to find a way to get my pirates any money either.

If I up the cost of my pirate structures (hostel, gambling, restaurant) to the mid level- I will be OK with money but then I quickly bleed my pirates dry. And I have no idea how my pirates get gold! It's supposed be from plundering during missions but I never have gotten any gold from any mission. I have built a schooner my last game and sent them to raid military fort, cruise in various zones and to kidnap skilled worker and they never come back with any plunder. Just unskilled captives from the fort. This was sending them out with only cutlasses though... Once I built a few muskets I sent them on a cruise mission again and this time I got like every event imaginable... first I get a message that they got plunder (woohoo- I thought) then a few seconds later a message my captain was captured (gee... ok) and then a message that my ship was lost at sea (talk about bad luck!) so there I was with almost no gold, out a captain and a ship... and of course all that crew was gone as well.

How come all this stuff happened after I put a few muskets on the ship, and every time they went out with only cutlasses they never got anything or had any bad event? Just bad luck?

luck of the draw, I'm afraid. bets bet is to get soemthing better than aschooner built(i'd reccomend frigate) soon after your next game starts.

Ok.

Do you have any tips on getting started? What I basically do right now when I start the game:

1. Contruction tent (or 2 to make things go faster) & 2nd lumber yard (more lumber so I can build things faster)
2. Build brewery
3. Build 2 hostels, animal den and dive right next to where I would be placing dock.
4. Build sea ration factory & iron mine
5. build dock & pig iron smelter
6. build boatyard & blacksmith (start producing cutlasses)
7. Build schooner

So schooner gets built and soon I get enough cutlasses (7 of em) to start doing Cruise missions.

I sent them on cruise missions in the same region and let them hav a few minutes between the missions

They never come back with anything... At this point it's hopeless... money dwindles down with no new source of money since my cruises always come back empty. Must I have guns or cannons to have successful cruises?

yep. my usual build order is:

1. construction tent. plenty of them. (youwant enough so that you have only skilled captives in the stockade.)
2. timber camp.
3. dock
4. black market.
then, hopefully, depending on which variant youplay ( botany bay, etc) youwill get a ship. almost fully stocked, just short 1 sea ration. buy a sea ration off the balckmarket, and wait for the ship tofill up. then send it off, and you SHOULD get some plunder. then buiid your iron industry and entertainment.

Oh, you start with a fully stocked ship?

I've been playing the option 2nd to the bottom (Lonely Colony? Or is that the bottom one?) so I start with Stockade, lumber, slop shack and 2 corn farms. When I build a dock I get no free ship.

So when you send your ships on cruises even on a new game they have full stock of cutlasses, guns and cannons?

My ship has been going out with full cutlass, no gun no cannon.

I think that may be the problem why I get no plunder ever.

it probably is. what is probably happening is the captain is goign against amassive ship and being sunk before he can draw alongside. in yuor case, you REALLY need to get a shipyeard and dockand black market up as soon asossible.

Ok cool I did great on my new game! Built a schooner and tis time I went exporing alot to find where the heavier ship traffic was, and then  sent her on some cruise missions and now am getting more gold than I know what to do with! (I put the pay on Miserly to try and slow pirate growth but they still climb ranks so darn quick!)

I was wondering though... I thought I read a few threads here where people mention getting skilled workers from cruises as well as wealthy captives. I've now done quite a few cruises and have received dozens and dozens of wealthy captives.. but nothing else. Are the kidnapping missions the only way to get skilled captiveS?

no, but you'll need frigates or above to get the skilled ones. they are only on the larger ships ( sloopsor above, really). bascially, there were probably some on the ship that sunk your schooner before.

Oh OK cool... will a frigate be better for this than say a galleon, since the galleon is so slow?

Frigates are the best ships for cruising, pure and simple, so yes.

1)  Don't employ any overseers or guards. Saves a lot of gold at the start.
2)  Set your smugglers' dive,  gambling place and wenches to gouge 'em until the pirates run out of cash.

That will keep the gold mounting up until you have a profitable cove or build ships.
