Hawaii's Pineapple King

« on: 09/03/06 at 01:25 PM »

First off I haven't been here in awhile.  I checked in every once in awhile, but I didn't post anything.  So I thought it would be fitting that my first post back would be a new competition....seems like people been asking for one anyway.

Here you go:  Buy Bye Happiness

Have Fun!

Hi artemais! Nice to see you again. And you came back with generous offers for the locals - a brand new scenario!

@ Juan: it looks like artemais is providing us with a new scenario/comp. so I'll put mine on hold.

Just to prove I still exist I've had my first go with a meagre 216 so I didn't bother with a screen shot. I shall return!

Looks like we have 4 competitors this time, so one will miss the podium ... It's sort of extra-challenging. Smiley

Well I've never been much good at happiness so after perhaps 10 attempts I'm always out after 6 years. My highest is 56. I've concentrated on getting people jobs (construction offices) plus top food (ie extra corn farms) plus housing - found tenements take too long so built apartments - I've also had medical, church, police but none have time to affect their respective ratings. There's really only the obvious four edicts you can issue and everyone is Easy Does It - so Art how do you get beyond the first six years?

I can completely Understand

May I Humbly suggest to artemais to please decrease the happiness requirement to about 60.The competition would certainly be a bit more playable  in my case atleast.

I'm curious; which are those four? They don't seem so obivious to me.

Obvious for me are: 1} Food For The People, 2} Social Security (if you have Retirees and/or Students), 3} Sensitivity Training (if you have Policemen and/or Soldiers) --

Beyond those, what?

Forgot sensitivity.  T'other two are Mardi Gras and Tax Cut - which I gave start year 2 and again start year 6 - and I was still below 55% this mornings try! Huh Huh Huh

I have not tried this yet, but -- increase everyone's pay rate?

Opps! Tax Cut slipped past my eye.

What's wrong with Sensitivity Training under the conditions I noted?

The increase in crime that comes with Mardi Gras makes the increase in entertainment quality marginal for long term happiness increase, IMHO.

Headliner - very marginal for happiness.
Pan-Caribbean Games - very marginal for happiness.
World Geographic Special - somewhat marginal for happiness.
Those three are one-time only so have to be timed for effect, and the "happiness" effect is very secondary.

Papal Visit is one-time so it needs to be timed and it has a very expensive "set-up" - especially getting/keeping the Religious Faction at "cordial" or better.

Headliner, like Mardi Gras, may be run every 3 years. Its entertainment increase is almost as good as Mardi Gras, and doesnt raise crime.

Yes - but you're missing the point. You only have six years and its totally impossible to build a power station let alone anything else in that time so the only edicts that are possible are the five which we originally thought of. Even if you built nothing but a church and cathedral I doubt if the religous rating would increase sufficiently to allow a papal visit and you've the 8 score for housing to cope with (don't think I've ever got housing above 20).

Opps!

I was working with the paper manual and not the "in-game" information.

On the "Economic Edict" page, 'The Headliner!' and 'Pan-Caribbean Games' (& the World Geographic Special) have the entry "One Time Only" under 'Notes' while the column 'Duration' shows "3 years"

I'm sorry if I overlooked a 'glitch' between the paper manual and the actual operation in the game.

'The Headliner!' is documented as raising local entertainment quality 10% while 'Mardi Gras' is shown as raising it 30%.

Folks, if you haven't noticed already, this scenario is harder than it looks. Although the description screen shows Very Easy, it was based on a map with Ridiculously Hard setting for economy and politics.

... artemais' entry might already be a winner ...

Aw, you gave away my secret....I was withholding that info to really frustrate people.

Or, I forgot to change it and then thought it would be funny not to... Roll Eyes

Hey, I'm in. I just downloaded and hopefully will find time to play tomorrow. I've never been any good with happiness either, so the real contest here may be for last place. Embarrassed

Well, if you don't get that happiness up within those first six years it is a quick game. Sad
On my first attempt I managed to tie belbincolne at 216 . I'll definitely try again on Sunday.

Yup 216. I managed to get Happiness to 60, but not past. That housing thing is the killer.
