Hi  What is the significance of the final score?  It is a raw number, and I have nothing to compare it with.  What is a good score?  An excellent score?  average...?   Thanks

Elections? Who needs elections?!

For me it was mostly to compare one game to another. I'd try different styles of play and then see if a capitalist island beats a communist one, or if a ruthless ruler beats a benevolent one. Others will probably post examples of their own scores for you to compare here. I can't recall any of mine right now. I stopped playing score games a very long time ago, and since then always went with open-ended.

Don't hold elections, else what you rule will end up ruling YOU.

As Privateer0 points out, the "final score" really doesn't have much meaning other than comparing various playings of the same game. That can be one player replaying a game in different styles for his own intellectual amusement, or a number of different players playing the same game in a virtual competition.

Look in some detail at the Scenario Editor / User Scenarios / Competitions board at this site, and you quickly will see threads about some of the competitions that go on here.

One of the things you should note about how/why the "final score" has little relative meaning across all games is the way the elements of the score change based on the set-up of the game. That is, the elements of the score are not constant for all games -- so how could there be a good, better, best level for any or all games?

In addition to manipulating the physical aspects of the island and the dictator characteristics to make gameplay easy or difficult, there are the Victory Conditions settings which determine the computation of the score for that game.
  • A Place In History (default)
    • # of Happy Citizens times 2 plus # of Content Citizens times 1 minus Unhappy Citizens times 2 plus value of Treasury & Buildings divided by 1000 plus Swiss Bank account times 5 plus 1000 = score
    • Happy Citizens = successful politics
    • Value of Treasury & Investment in Buildings = successful economics
    • Swiss Bank account = success for personal interests, e.g. corporate CEO bonuses
  • Don't Worry, Be Happy
    • Happy Citizens times 4 plus Content Citizens times 2 minus Unhappy Citizens times 4 = score
  • Economic Powerhouse
    • Value of Treasury & Buildings times 2 plus 1000 = score
  • 'Tis Money that Makes the Man Your Golden Parachute
    • Swiss Bank account time 20 plus plus 1000 = score.
.
So - there is not A score for the game to put into the categories that Alan asks about.
