Hello, I'm currently playing this game on Gametap.  I really enjoy it.  Unfortunately they haven't made the manual available for download.   Can someone explain the strategy behind using the "board em, pound em, and harass em"  options for cruising?  So far I've only been using the "board" option.  Do you still get loot if you only harass or pound ? someone?  Or is it used for some other purpose?

 Wink Cool

The default is "Board 'Em", so when you just hit cruise, you are using "Board 'Em" battle orders.

... the first round of battle is always pound 'em ... a ship will often be sunk on its maiden cruise if it has no cannons ...

Board 'Em is best for capturing lots of wealthy and skilled captives but is more dangerous for your pirates. Harrass 'Em kills most of the opponents but is safer for pirates.  Pound 'Em is safer for pirates than Board 'Em but also more dangerous to opponents.

... I'm currently playing this game on Gametap.  ...

I really have no idea what that means other than a guess that you have not bought the game.

Perhaps you need to know a bit more since you do not have the manual for reference.

When you have ships to send to sea, there are several missions on which they can be sent:
  • Cruise missions are the default orders ... unless another mission is assigned. Board, Harass & Pound are operational modes for cruises.
  • When you set the mission order menu to 'Raid [a Settlement]', or issue a raid edict ..., a dialog gives you the option to choose the type of settlement to raid. ... your first few missions should probably be raids ...
  • A ship assigned to 'Kidnap [a Skilled Worker]' will leave and grab one of a particular skilled captive you want. This costs 250 gold ...
  • A ship assigned to 'Explore' returns with additional knowledge. A ship can explore with no weapons, but does need some rations.
  • A ship assigned to 'Foster a War' goes to the area in the sea you assigned it. It will look for ships of one particular nation, raise false colors and then fire upon that ship. It will not press home the attack. The goal is to make one of the Great Powers angry with the other.
.
.
I hope that is helpful information about what to do with ships.

Thanks Coconut Kid!  Appreciate the info, it helps out a lot.  I still have the common problems of my ships getting sunk and never enough captives but I guess I will check out the strategy forum for tips.  nobody said a pirate's life was easy.   Grin

Gametap is a service you subscribe to that gives you access to over 900 games.  You have to use their player software but you can download and play full games almost instantly.  Most of the titles are a little bit older but still a great value at $10 a month.  They also have Tropico Mucho Macho on there which I've been having fun with.
