So many times I’ve seen posts about what someone would do to make Tropico better that I’ve acted on it several times.  Twice I’ve sat down and compiled master lists and presented them here to get the attention of the powers that be.  Twice to no real avail.  Breakaway made a very good effort at a xpac but left so much untapped.  There was room for at least one more, if not two.  The original owners of the game, PopTop, have pretty much walked away from it.  Yet, they keep the rights, and wait for a good offer.  While I would never recommend an altruistic move by a for-profit company, they should be more willing to structure a deal to sell the rights or work out a royalties arrangement and pass it off to an eager company.

But that’s not the reason for this manifesto.  After 2 years of regular play and discussion about Tropico, I have a decent idea of its potential.  Toss in my heavy research of all the Café game suggestions and I’ve had some pretty solid ideas start to form in my mind about the game’s potential.  This essay is what I would do if tasked with updating the game for a true Second Edition of the original game.  But since I have not the money or skills to do this with PopTop, I’m left with this extensive musing.  I will freely use many other player suggestions in this manifesto. ...

Now don’t look for me to advance many radical departures from the original game.  First because I like the original game.  I want an updated game and not a new one.  I also know that most companies that would tackle this project are going to build from the original game and engine.  So while I couldn’t actually make this update, I must try to put myself in the maker’s shoes.

I’ve broken this into 3 sections for my benefit.  The sections are Conceptual, Buildings, and Edicts.  The latter two are self explanatory, while the former is where I discuss the whole of the game and its concepts.

It's worth reading.

 Tropico Expansion Poll Results
« on: October 06, 2001, 09:44:06 » by Junta_Joe

First, some credit where credit is due:

*A. Mueller - who's German Tropico site held a parallel vote to increase our vote totals. His poll had more voters than our site did!

*Tish - Who assisted me in many ways and promoted the poll tirelessly.

*Ms. Beale - Whose 12th grade stats class play tested the game (All in the name of research) and helped me come up with poll parameters to ensure a fair vote. Her 4 students were also allowed to vote.

Be sure to give these folks a round of applause when you comment. This was a co-operative effort, not a one man show.

37 others recieved 1 or 2 votes.

Removal Vote Results

Voodoo priests was the overwhelming loser with 13 votes. The ability to repel invasions garnered 5 votes. Both were removed and will not be submitted to Poptop. There were 7 others with 3 votes. I decided not to gut the list to make that 3rd pick. To pick one at random felt presumtuous.

Vote Notes

I was required to "interperate" about seven votes. Things like nude beaches were rolled into more tourist attractions, etc. There were about 8 "lost" votes based on write-ins or silliness. The best few write-ins were added to the list, but were not counted in the polling. I felt that was a fair compromise. I truly wish more of you had expressed your suggestions during the preliminary period.

*= Teamsters, Laborers & Dockworkers

Although I have to say I'm a little blue that voodoo priests didn't make it. ...  Actually I thought voodoo priest were kinda cool too. I see that comment all the time when the island peons can't make it to the clinics. They have a distinctive island flavor.
