Maybe, some day, there will be a military exp pak. Lots of scenarios that stress the need to use the troops, more edicts and some variety in the types of soldiers available.

hey, tramchr suggested just that.... he even thought of necular weapons and i"m thinking if rebels had vehicles, i'd be a little harder... but if I had say, mamoth tanks from the first RA game... run em all over (CRUNCH!) The island would be decorated with H-bombs!

Let's be realistic, people. Why would anyone need a nuke in Tropico? How is it going to assist you in ruling your banana republic?
In regards to tanks, they would be interesting, but would actually be of little value. If military vehicles were ever to be included, jeeps with MG's would be more appropriate. Of course, before vehicles could be included in Tropico, the whole road thingie would have to be revised.
There are others fixes that would be of more use, such as:
1) Assigning a designated group of soldiers to a general and then being able to issue an "Eliminate the Rebels" edict.
2) Change the game parameters where the military is not instigating a coup... when it has no reason to. Why do generals and soldiers that have it better than everyone else, always launch a coup.

If we stick to the format of a 1950's Caribbean/Latin American setting then jeeps, checkpoints (prevent the movement of Tropicans)and maybe the odd tank would suffice. And more oppressive edicts of course. Even then though, a tank would only really be worthwhile if the rebels actually had bases. So long as the Dungeon, Army Base and Fort pan out I will be a happy tyrant.

I like the idea of checkpoints. They could be manned by police, soldiers or a mix of the two. If a milpak is ever done, instead of tanks... maybe, armored cars would be more appropriate.

May I join my voice to the millitarists ? What we need are secret police. Either an edict where your police have better weapons and more control, or a new secret police HQ building which employs a gestapo-like guard unit... Just an idea...

Ahhh, Splangy, you would have blubbed like a girl (as I and many others did in January 2001) when PopTop announced the Secret Police were out of the game.
No real reason was given, other than the usual time constraints.

The game isn't unbalanced in regards to the use of force, in fact it's very realistic.
Consider: Unhappy people work less efficiency. True in the real world, and I think in the game.
The extra money spent on the military could just as easily keep the people happy, eliminating the need for a military. Happy people work harder for El Presidente, making more money.
So, spend the same amount of money on making the people happy as you would to control them and you have a net win. Works in the real world, why not in Tropico?
Would you work as hard for a dictator as for someone who treats you well? Maybe when he's looking, but no dictator can look everywhere at once without bankrupting himself on police and the military, who usually then decide that they would make better leaders anyway.
If I use my power to oppress others, I may gain power, but there is a net overall loss of power, as all parties use power in the oppressor/oppressed game that could otherwise have been redirected to profitable ends.
Cooperation triumphs over competition every time.

True, but it's still fun to oppress people!!!
I believe that the Eliminate, Capture, and Arrest edicts are stupid in reducing overall respect! If anything, they should increase respect, or at least reduce courage. People need to FEAR the power of the Presidente!
Fort... ahhh... yes
Wouldn't it be more fun to be able to DO things with the military? For example, click the "Military Detachment" edict on a certain patch of forest and your troops will invade that area. Or perhaps click the "Rebel Purge" edict to launch an en-masse assault on the jungle rebels. You could have guerilla shoot-outs and things. If the battle gets bad enough for the rebel side you might even have suicidal rebels that run into the city, shooting every police officer and military person in sight.

For what was hyped as a game for wannabee dictators... greater effort went into making it a game for "Greenies."
I have always felt that more flexibility need to be added for the army and police. MHO, it is through what is now the Training box/function. This could have been re-designed as a "mission" box.

Publish a game in any genre and include a single soldier - or even a club or spear - and there will instantly appear a squadron of people with suggestions on how to "fix" the game so they can play war games with it. The only thing worth while in this thread is this fragment of a lost interview about the Paradise Island expansion: Ed Beach, executive producer at BreakAway Games: Well, it's a lot easier to play as an evil El Presidente now. The army base can be built to keep your soldiers happy while the rest of the populace suffers. You can conscript uneducated citizens into the army. You can also invoke the martial law edict to cancel all upcoming elections or try to win elections by intimidating the voters -- the less courageous ones may vote for you if you keep throwing your election opponents in jail. So we now feel the toolkit for being a proper Caribbean dictator is complete!
