I fire everyone and try to bulldoze the goat ranch, but it won't let me! Am I doing something wrong, or is it impossible to bulldoze this building?

Does it allow you to change it to a cattle ranch? Maybe it is some kind of glitch. You should be able to bulldoze it. Try changing it to cattle and then try to bulldoze and see if it will let you?? Just a thought - good luck - Pam

Does it appear red after you gave the order to bulldoze it?

I can't bulldoze my cattle ranch either. The groud turns to crap, so I just lower the pay to zero, x the empty slot to make sure no one works there, and build buildings right next to the ranch. It sucks that maintenance still has to be paid.
Have people found that ranches are superior to food crops and fisheries? I have stopped building ranches for now.

My food quality levels went up quite a notch when they started getting beef at the market...a lot better than some other land crops. Fish seem to have the same effect, but variety is the key right? The more different kinds of food, the higher the food quality.

Variety is a big factor. I would think that works for type as well as kind. What I mean is, if you only have corn then add bananas you should see an improvement. Since you've doubled the variety, the improvement should be significant. If you add a second, then a third kind of produce, you should see improvements each time. But I would expect the amount of improvement to be smaller each time, because each new kind adds a smaller percentage of the whole. Now, if you add meats, you double the types of foods available. The improvement should be much greater than adding another kind of produce. Although it seems to happen that way for me, this is just my theory to explain what I think I have seen. I don't really know.

I assume you had enough money to bulldoze the ranch?
I haven't quite figured out how the ranchs work. They deplete the ground quickly and it don't get replenished; however, it don't seem to have an overly adverse effect on them. Had 2 skilled farmers run one the other night for 40 years the ground was almost totally red but they still kept a herd that filled up 2/3 -3/4 of the queche. They made me a fortune! 2 cattle farm with upgrades and both made over 100,00 profit for me in the game. Also it seems that nearby crops weren't effected by the cattle and the farm's crops spread right over the grazing area, agian with no ill effects that I could dicern. If that turns out to be the case ranchs could be really nice if you squeezed one in a courner where 4 farms come together. But need to play some more to figure this out.

This non-bulldozing of ranches is a known game bug that has been ignored by the makers since the beginning. No one from the makers has ever said anything substantial on the subject.
Since Breakaway took over the xpac, one of the guys there named Breakaway Mac had CafeDave make him up a separate board to see the response of the new product here. I took the opportunity to let him know about this glitch. He said he would pass it along. We'll just have to see how it goes. One day we might get a patch. Keep your fingers crossed. :-/

I have a theory that this bug has something to do with the fact that the ranch is the only building that actually produces moving characters...well...goats, but work with me here! I get the feeling that this might be a tricky bug to crack, b/c upon demolishing it, you'd have to make all those cows and goats disappear, too.

I was thinking something like that too. The ranch generates characters that cannot be fired or evicted. The protections required for that may make the ranches invulnerable. My sense is they would have to recode the whole ranch system. Since the coders could do that or work on the new (read money generating) projects, guess which way the developers have steered them?
We could start a email campaign to them. Squeaky wheels get the grease and all that.
