Cable is much faster than dial-up.  A friend of mine just got cable hooked up to his main computer, but not to his kids's.  When he downloaded AOL 6.0 on the cable it took about 6 minutes.  On the other with a 56k dial-up connection it took an hour and a half!:o

I just received an E-Mail from Caddet and he explained alot of what you are saying.  I replied:

"O.K.  I think I get it.
Braoadband  is not the same as DSL (even though the ads here seem to be combining the two.

Broadband is nore akin to television cable, while DSL uses the high frequency on copper phone lines (while voice uses only the lower frequency).

So, it really comes down to three things: Speed, Cost, and Availablility.

Availablility for DSL has been the insurmountable problem for me, so far, since the telco is setting up the hotsy-totsy sections of town first.

Caddet, I am going to post this, because it may lead to further discussion.  Thanks for this information."

Something else I understand: the telephone company connets to the net by fiber optics.  Yet the connection from local office (where the tranmission equipment is set up) to the house is by copper wire.  Apparently, the telephone connection doesn't work on anything other than the copper wire.

Of course, a T line would be ideal -- if I ever hit the lottery.  So, I'll be checking into the broadband option next.

Thanks guys.

I have another question of our panel of experts:

With Windows M.E. (a fancy version of Windows 98) up and running, what codes can I use to improve the up load or down load speeds! Huh

Although ME has some added features to it's dial-up graphics, there's nothing in the operating system that should affect your actual access speeds.  Other than having newer modem drivers.

I thought there might be some subroutine programs that could maximize transmission in the Control Panel screen for the Modem ... something like "AT" (the meaning of which I have no idea).

I usually pass on those types of questions to my Systems Engineers...I know when to shut up and not pretend to be a tech..

But I pay them too much too respond here!
