I was playing last night and encountered this problem.

Shacks are the only type of building you can't evict tenants.  Normally, not that big an issue, but in some cases, it borders on the absurd.  OK, yeah, a farmer making a pittance might live there (esp since I tend to lag behind on building tenements).  But last night, on multiple occasions, I had married college graduates living in these darned shack (making a combined income of >$30).  This despite the empty luxury housing I had build expressly to get them out (priced at a very reasonable $7).  I eventually lured them out by dropping it to $5, then jacking it back to $7 when they moved in.  But still, that probably cost me "happy points" by altering their rent while they were in there!

One option I used from time to time was bulldozing them out, but that takes too long.  We dictators ought to have the right to send our police/soldiers to forcibly remove them from the shacks (ok, dock some respect if you must) for situations like that.

A related problem I saw was overqualified workers.  I have a hard time trying to get certain high-school or college educated people out of the stupid farms!  I don't care how good a farmer they are!  Get their butts into the high school/bank/power station/armory/clinic/church/etc where they belong!  They pass up a perfectly good chance for $10-$15 (not to mention a lot more job satisfaction) and instead go for a measly $5!  I fired one college farm girl at least 5 times (she kept switching to another farm) before she'd finally got the message and joined one of the engineers at the power station!  I loathe to hire foreigners; I've only had to do it once this game and that was to jumpstart my college, but what good is it to have a progressive education policy when they won't get out of the teamster/construction office/farms?!

I'm aware of that; the new uneducated refugees coming to the island (I get a regular flow) can fill that role quite nicely.  The people who've been on my island for a while (long enough to complete high school and college) can do better than dig ditches and roads.

I think what he means is that his educated people keep taking jobs that are "beneath" their potential.  He has people with college degrees who are working at the farms even though there are journalist positions and teaching positions and even general positions open.  It's almost a waste of the education.

I'm of two minds.  As a dictator, it is frustrating to see people working where they want.  I want my college people to have college jobs.  I only want the peasants to work and toil in the hot tropical sun.  For the record, I do happily boot people into "better" jobs.

As a human though, maybe the person is happier at the farm instead of working as an engineer.  It's too simplistic to say that a college graduate always wants a sophisticated job.  I can relate to this personally because my mother is horrified that I work at a job where I don't have to wear a tie.  She feels that I should work as a "professional".  I disagree.

Unfortunately, Poptop can't be expected to program that and as players you'd be really frustrated by someone like me who geniunely is happier in a job where a clean t-shirt is standard and a shirt with a collar is dressing up.  I'd hate to work in some paper pushing job where I can't make any impact on life.

Just think of it as another bit of realism.

Tropican job selection includes two factors which the posters did not consider.

1} The individual's support of factions will sway their job selection. Educated who support the communist faction will be satisfied as farmers, etc.

2} Tropicans will tend to stay with occupations in which they already have a lot of experience. Check their "skills" panel.
