RT2 is probably my favorite game of all time.  The thought that went into the scenarios and the historical nature of the game was incredible - not to mention stand alone replayability.  Even the sound effects were very original and industry related.

My biggest sound effect irritation with Tropico is the bulldoze sound.  I reeks of RT2.  I just would have prefered an evil laugh or the sound of an A Bomob going off.

By the way, if that is the most critical you are, I'd like to have a beer with you.  You ought to meet my wife:)

Maybe I should revisit RRT2.  I had some serious issues with the economic model -- in that they never made sense.  The computer-controlled opponents would always make so much money...

Sounds great!  I'll buy the first round.  We can bring our wives along so they can drive us home.

I played the demo of RRT2, and I must admit, although it was hard to win on the hardest difficulty (duh), it certainly was challenging.

Not to make this too much on RRT2 but, it was a very challenging game.  The economic model was supported more toward the flavor of the time period and Robber Barons.  Therefore, it centered around stock and raiding other comapnies.  It was pretty basic in nature though.  Like Tropico, it was a very fun game and could be played out in a night, which I love.

I am sad to admit but I too have hopped on to the bandwagon when I heard B&W was going to be the greatest game of all time *My hairy speckled ___* I thought that multiplayer for the game would be awesome... I have cable and it totally is amazing 150k downloads and when i get to play a mplayer game its so slow!!! Its also buggy as heck. I tell my "creature" *annoying plop of tamagotchi circuits* to go somewhere and all of a sudden another player froze my creature multiple times!! I was sitting in my chair waiting for an hour!! This game had a bug where if you clicked really fast you could cast miracles multiple times... well this game sucks big time and tropico is totally amazing. there is so many different things yoiu can do in tropico "Boourns Black & White"

Wait, didn't somebody say Tropico is buggy? Why did they say that? What is with Tropico being buggy?

I'd tell you that they were referring to the tarantulas but it's an old joke and very few people got it the first time I said it.

Actually, the only "bug" that I've experienced is a random crashing to desktop.  It only seems to happen from the late 80's on, and only if the island is heavily populated.

There are lots of issues about bugs in another area of the forum called (oddly enough) "Bugs and Suggestions"  Smiley

B&W does have a patch, its a developer patch that's absolutely huge, and covers every bug I've encountered so far. It also adds an option to skip the tutorial. Its explained at: www.planetbw.com

Personally, I was infinitely amused with Tropico. But I was infinitely intrigued with B&W. The difference between the two games, is that Tropico gives you instant delights, but B&W rewards hard work and long hours.

For example, the first time I played Tropico, I had instant fun. I got into the game relatively quickly. The first time I played B&W, I was instantly amazed, and overwehelmed. After a short time playing, it got boring. But I persisted, and after a long time playing, I can fully appreciate the depths of the game. Ok, there are a hell of a lot of bugs, I'm hoping the patch will fix those. But I just realized the full scope of my creatures intelligence. How doing different things affects the game greatly.

I think both games are two of the best I have played in my life. People raved about C&C, I hated it. People marvelled at Deus Ex, I found it depressing. However, I can't say the same thing for either Tropico or B&W. Each, hits the nail on the head, appealing to a different part of my psyche. Both these games are bigger, and better than anything available today. Tropico, infinitely more entertaining than any other God game or RTS I've played, including AoE. B&W, by far the deepest and most intriguing God game I've ever played, and its nice to look at as well. You've just gotta stick at it.

Thanx for reading this rather extensive post, everyone. You all knocked B&W pretty bad. I just felt something had to be said for its amazing depth and charm. And saying this, Tropico is instantly playable and enjoyable, and I anticipated both games eargerly.  Grin

Well, I certainly agree Tropico is better. Even without ever having played it. Here's my take on B&W. It's a fly around in the air, move all over the place, get NOTHING done, game. Sorta like the StarTrek stuff which I didn't like either. And I don't play the Flight Sim games or Sim People (whatever) for the same reason. Makes me seasick moving around inside the game.  Roll Eyes    Smiley Smiley

"Bugs and Suggestions" huh, kinda catchy.

Anyway, now that we all agree Tropico is better, why is thread still going? Of course, "What!?!" still lives so I guess...

This thread is "still going" because there will always be the "which is better" discussion about everything... Mac vs. PC, Ford vs. Chevy, McDonalds vs. Burger King... the list goes on and on.  You can't say that anything is "right" but you definitely can have your own opinion as to why you think it's the "best".

I meant to say that you can't insist that something is "right".  It may be right for you, but that doesn't mean that it's right for everyone else.

That's all I mean.  Sorry. Sad

I'm going to change the subject because I don't want to get into a debate about this with you.

If B&W is anything like the Populous demo it's not going to interest me.

I apologize if I offended you, Chris... that sincerely was not my intention.

BTW - Populous held my attention for about a month, but once you get through all the levels and figure out all the "secrets" to winning the game and becoming a god, there's no point (IMHO) to play the game again because it's just going to be the same game.

No offense taken.

I only played the "Populuos" demo and it didn't hold any appeal for me.

Now, my question is, why does B&W get such high reviews?

Though some good points have been made, I believe that Tropico and Black & White (own both) are both fantastic games in their own respect.  They are fairly different, it is not like comparing D2 to another 3rd person RPG like Baldurs Gate.  We should be greatful that people are making such great games. Though I do admit, Tropico is currently consuming all my gaming time, hehe Grin.

Okay, so I guess you can't really compare the games as they're in different genres.

So the question now is which do you play more I guess.

The fascinating thing about Black & White is the comparison of the "Professional" reviews by the various computer gaming sites and magazines, with the ratings of actual users posted on many of the same gaming sites.  The game mags give the program mostly 9.5/10, while the user reviews are much lower on average, with many negative postings.  Tropico, on the other hand, has user ratings higher than the "professional" reviews.  I think this makes a significant point!

Having worked with both programs, all I can say is I traded in my Black & White to upgrade to the latest Sims iteration, House Party!

In my opinion, although they are very different programs, Tropico has it all over Black & White!  I keep wanting to go back and play it again and again.  And I keep enjoying playing it!

Take a look at the reviews of Gamespot and you will see that even if many other reviewers would love a game, they always give an honest review of a game. Take High Heat for example they gave it a 7.8 out of 10.0 , but most other people would give it a 85% or 90%. And they gave Tropico a 8.6 , which is high for a game, but they gave B&W a 9.3 , so how can B&W  not be better or at least as good as Tropico? I never played B&W but I have Tropico, and I think that Gamespot's review on it is pretty much what I would've said.
