Theres a lot of jobs that could be held by moth man and women but aren't allowed to. Such as teachers and proffesors. I think all jobs should be albe to be held by both, other than showgirls, soldiers and few other jobs. It seems girls are more schoalry than man in Tropico, but there is so few educated jobs for them. Probably half of my college educated females end up having jobs that dont reqiure any education.

I remember this being explained on a preview somewhere. They said that having a male and female version of every person on the island would make the game well over a gigabite. In other words, this would have delayed the game at least another two months AND the game would have to be on a DVD. That would exclude at least %50 of the sales. I think it is wrong but, what can ya do?

Most computers have atleast 20 gigs these days. I could spare atleast 10. With all my downloads for the sims that game takes up about 1.5 gigs on my harddrive. Dvd aren't that expensive, I'd pay 60 for this game...

it's a freaking game. adhere to non-discriminating, non-sexist practices in your real life and expect the same of others but leave the truisms of a 1950's repressed society alone. it's a feaking game.

I agree with Strider. But what I ment by DVD's is that alot of people don't have DVD drives. I know at least 10 friends that are thinking of buying the game, but only me and another guy own DVD drives. This means that God Games/Poptop would lose %80 of sales in my case. That's why I think they didn't make two of each.

i think the gender-specific roles are interesting, and they sometimes help me plan better. if i have 6 unemployed males loafing about, i know what i can and cannot build to provide them with jobs. i have also mentioned in another thread that it seems women go for education better. i can have all my professor, doctor, and banker slots open, but they will take forever to fill, but my available slots for engineers and journalists are filled rather quickly. i would like to have seen both genders for all positions - even working in cabarets and the military - but i understand that PopTop had to make cuts and sacrifices, and i think for the sake of keeping an overall gender balance, they did a good job.

I am sure if they had ended up with a game requiring a larger distribution size, they would have just gone to a double CD, not a DVD.

I like the difference in jobs. It keeps me on my toes. Why don't I have any engineers? Oh, I need more college females! How come I don't have any bankers? Oh need more educated males.
Then I sort through the rift-raft and find what I'm looking for. It's a tedious game really. I like it. I never expect to finish a scenario in one sitting.

For me it's personally it's no big deal if a game is PC or not. However, I like the way the gender actually comes into play, it gives the game a little something extra to think about gameplay-wise. Also Strider hit on a good point 'a 50's repressed society' (althought there are A LOT exceptions here as to balance the number of jobs for both genders for gameplay reasons)

As others have said, I like the fact that each sex has certain roles to fill... it's a gameplay factor that you have to pay attention to. It also makes the "Womanizer" trait a little more of a pain. College-level jobs are tough to fill though. I don't need Engineers until very late in the game and Journalists are a niche industry on my islands so far.
You also have to bear in mind that women can, at almost any time, drop out of the labor force and become a mother for a while. I hate it when I notice power blackouts because an Engineer or two decided to become a mom.

sooo, daveman, i think i hear what you're saying, and i like it. as a dictator (especially totalitarian) we should be able to issue some sort of edict that regulates pregnancy. in other words, parents or women have to petition to the government to have a child. i like it!!!! we could even have the occasional woman who tried to "sneak" having a child (just like you may sometimes miss a protestor while doing other things), but if you find out (or if a loyalist turns her in), then off to prison or perhaps a hole in the ground.
brave new world, here we come!

Hi, I, being a woman, don't mind the job roles with the game. It is just a game afterall, and anyway, not all countries have the same options for women as they do for men. Believe it or not, there are countries out there who still have very specific roles for men and women.
Oh, and about the disk space, I only have a 13 gig hard drive and no dvd player.
Sincerely, Kim

The game is horribly sexist, and racist as well. Every single tourist is Anglo, every rich female is a leggy blonde, virtually every immigrant to the island is dark-skinned... Worse, it uses child labor in the worse way - if you're 13 and without a job, you're a street bum. And I've seen small 5 year old children living in corrugated ramsackle shacks, etc. I love it. Ever since my father told me about Dr. Salazar of Portugal - his excesses, his cruelties, the savagery he invoked on his cowed people to ensure their meek obedience, I have dreamed of such a job. When my papa would watch Zorro, I would quietly root for the Don. When he would cheer Eroll Flynn in "Robin Hood", I would perfect my Basil Rathbone sneer, and dream of being the Guy of Guisborne. Now, finally, that dream can be realized. Of COURSE no woman can work in Tropico University, gringo! The job for ugly women is "high school teacher", or maybe "maid". If she is so smart, let her fiddle with the knobs at the electrical plant... Everyone knows electrical appliances are woman's work, and sitting around all day watching gauges is not proper labor for the "muy macho" anyway. Hey? Who let my supplies of rum and cigars dwindle at the palace? Have you soldiers been tapping into the Teamster's retirement fund again?

The simple fact is as outlined by Phil, is that all the characters in the game, with both a male and female versions, would kill most machines. The only ones able to run it would be 256MB with 800+Mhz and probably a beefy graphics card.
Anyway-who wants a male showboy

i'm sure there are lots of people who would like male showboys, Chairman Robbo, but for me, i would like to have women in my military, maybe even an all-female lethal squad of assassins. and let's change those uniforms to black vinyl catsuits ... ooo, wait a minute, did i just type out some sort of fantasy?? well, what's the point of being dictator if you cant indulge your personal power trips?

skot i agree with you 110%. I'm simply saying that due to memory constraits, and taste, certain characters were left out (maybe i am being a bit sexist)
and i would love to have females in the military on my island, especially one poarticular female

chairman robbo, did you ever read Dune: God Emperor, where Leto recruits the head of the rebellion (a woman, and not coincidentally, a relative of his) to head his administration? sound like your story?? - recruit that female rebel to head up the palace guard?? ;-)
and i fully understand about the constraints on the size of the game and balancing gender roles. who wants guys working at Hooters, anyway? (wait, that's not a Tropico thing)

"Prince of Darkness" Johnson (esteemed "El Great One" of Liberia, who taped the convoluted execution of his predecessor and gave copies to delighted visitors) had a "hit squad" made up solely of his favored prostitutes, all armed with automatic weapons. His rival, Charles Taylor, not to be outdone, changed the "uniform" of his men to wigs and dresses. As for "showboys", I hear that Manuel Noriega was supposed to indulge in them now and again. When you can do whatever you want, who's a slave to convention?

The simple fact is as outlined by Phil [PopTop's chief], is that all the characters in the game, with both a male and female versions, would kill most machines. The only ones able to run it would be 256MB with 800+MHz and probably a beefy graphics card. -- I'm simply saying that due to memory constraits, and taste, certain characters were left out. The first question was answered - several times. Additionally, the 1950s were a different time. The education levels also represent social class levels. The big error PopTop made in its struggle with gender is with the Mother avatar. The economy collapses if Mothers are out of the workforce for the three years when their children are babies. Most of the complainers have no interest in gender equality; their interest is in having ALL adults available at all times to fill any job. They want interchangeable parts to the last degree.
