Hey guys, I new here and I wanted to know how to get lumber mills, canneries, cigar factories, jewlery factories and rum distilleries to work.  Do you just build for example tobacco farms and then build a cigar factory?  Or will the teamsters take it all to the docks.  I had a logging camp and when I built a lumber mill nothing happened.  I just lost money.  Please reply quickly as I want to get back to my gaming.

Once the factory is built the teasmters start taking the raw materials there.

You also have to get some employees working in the factory.

Yep, and it's a good idea to build roads between the dock, factories, and raw materials.

Teamsters will sometimes take materials to a dock anyhow, if the factory is much further than the nearest dock say, or (I think this is what was happening to me) if the factory has too much input stock. (four gold mines -> one jeweler = bottleneck)

AS I understand it, teamsters attempt ot take to a facotry what that factory can handle.  So as you get more employees there, the teamsters will deliver more.

I found that your point was confirmed last night when I played Dave.

My new Cannery hsd only two staff present and this restricted the amount of input and output stores.

Granted my farms and my island could just suck, but I'll go with what you have said Dave, as the evidence on my little piece of Paradise has borne it out.  Grin

Has anyone experimented to see what the ratio of factory to raw material sites is for each type of product?  The only one I've closely monitored was jewelry.  I had two fully staffed gold mines within 10 blocks of my jeweler shop (also staffed) and they were pretty steady.  I always had 5 or six units in both input and output.  Also, I built teamsters and a freighter dock right beside of the factory.  Work!  You little Peons!  HAHAHAHAHAHAHA! (seriously, do you think the power thing is going to my head?)  :-/

PopTopDave (reply #6) and Mr.P (reply #7) state that factories have input queues which are limited in proportion to the number of workers employed in the building. Goods will be delivered to the building if there is room in the queue for the carrier's load when it is picked up. Otherwise the load will be taken to the Port.

It is common sense that the factory should be placed between the production facility and the Port.

The limited input queue on the Furniture Factory leads to "lost loads" when the Lumber Mills tend to over supply it.

Has anyone experimented to see what the ratio of factory to raw material sites is for each type of product?  ...

Because of the wide variation in output for each building, it is impossible to derive a fixed ratio as is typical in other, simplistic games.
