... I want to know how to get ... factories to work. Do you just build (for example) tobacco farms and then build a cigar factory? Or will the teamsters take it all to the docks? I had a logging camp and when I built a lumber mill nothing happened. ...
PopTopDave (reply #6) and Mr.P (reply #7) state that factories have input queues which are limited in proportion to the number of workers employed in the building. Goods will be delivered to the building if there is room in the queue for the carrier's load when it is picked up. Otherwise the load will be taken to the Port.
It is common sense that the factory should be placed between the production facility and the Port.
The limited input queue on the Furniture Factory leads to "lost loads" when the Lumber Mills tend to over supply it.
Has anyone experimented to see what the ratio of factory to raw material sites is for each type of product? ...
Because of the wide variation in output for each building, it is impossible to derive a fixed ratio as is typical in other, simplistic games.
