Hello, question:
On one of my islands the island is very well suited to papaya, the land is always green for all farms for papaya, but is papaya a suitable food replacement for corn, or must you grow some corn to feed the populace?  While my farms go from yellow to green for corn, they are always green for papaya.

Thanks

Hmmm, good question...I always thought pineapples, papaya, bananas and corn were equilvalent in terms of food, but I could be wrong

I've been meaning to ask why my land for corn farms start at green then go yellow quite soon.

Who ever heard of a papayas taco?  Smiley

This does raise the question; if you build the fishing wharf and you do have farms producing corn do your people eat fish tacos? And don't you HAVE to build a ranch so that beef can be produced for those tacos?

You always see your people wandering about thinking about a taco and a drink but did anyone ever explain what ingredients were in that taco?

Yes papayas actually seem to be a more suitable food source then corn as well as exporting for more gold. Last game I didn't have any corn fields from day one. For 70 years the people existed off of papayas I was really suprised because I usually go for pineapples but the soil gets tainted after awhile, not so with the 4 papaya plantations. The healthiest farm of them all netted over 100k in export. The peoples food quality was always green arrows and not once in the game did they ask for more food. Your milage may vary, depending on initial island randomization...

Which grows faster? Corn or Papyas if you ask me the would be the deciding factor when it comes to a food source.

Crops wear out the soil just like in real life (well maybe not just like...) so you either need to find a 'sweet spot' or rotate your crops.

P.S. A sweet spot is a place that seems to stay green regardless of the crop or the length of time it's been in use.

Sugar is the biggest culprit in the "soil depletion" department.  Bulletsponge advised me that he grows a sugar plantation next to a corn farm, and alternates crops every other harvest (it was every other harvest, wasn't it? :-/)

One thing I noticed last night is that farms in the path of constant rainfall don't seem to get depleted of nutrients as quickly as those out of the path of the rainfall.  Of course, these farms were only growing corn.

Finally - these is what I've gleaned from my gameplay as far as the various crops:

Corn - people love corn.  Grows quickly, doesn't cost too much to maintain, and doesn't seem to deplete the ground the way other crops do.

Papaya - people don't mind papaya, but don't enjoy it as much as the corn.  Seems to take the second shortest amount of time to grow, but depletes the soil and requires sloped hillsides to grow really well.

Pineapples - people hate pineapple.  Every pineapple farm I've ever had has been difficult to start, and usually ended up with the narrator screaming "El Presidente, your people are starving!!"

Banana - if this were a real island, your people would starve to death.  Bananas take forever to grow, and if you don't have a full staff they never seem to reach full growing potential.

I'm not really sure, initially the papayas seem to grow slower but I think that is deceptive because with papayas they eventually create a different kind of blanketing effect (It seemed the island beauty was greater than with corn). Whereas corn seemed to fluctuate up and down.

At the start of the game start food quality isn't that important. The people seem to be pretty complacent the first 5-10 yrs. So which grows faster might not be an issue. I tried previously to always have 2 corn fields, 1 pineapple, 1 cow ranch, and 1 fish wharf...I was constantly hearing "your people grow hungry". Thing is though each island is different and I'm sure I hit one of those 'sweet spots' for papaya's because I didn't rotate crop even once from the start. (It was a tiny steep island, and the 4 papaya farms dominated the crest).

to me the biggest advantage of Papayas over corn is the sell value. You won't make much (more likely will lose money) with corn, whereas with papayas the people will be fed and the excess is sold for profit not a loss. Of course, the conditions gotta be right to grow it or it's a loser.

I think that's what was happening on my last island. The crops were right in the band of rainfall. That's why I was so impressed with papayas...however if I had planted corn I would've probably had similar results as with papayas (no crop rotation etc.)

I like to grow papayas when I can find a huge area that's suitable, simple because of the way the plantation can spread out. Who cares if they take twice as long to grow when the plantation winds up ten times as big as a corn farm?

I have been relying on pineapple and fish to feed my people.  The reason I like pineapple is for the export value.  My 1st industry is then a cannery.  That way what is not eaten by the people is turned into canned goods which have a much higher export value than just the raw stuff.

Follow the guidance of Mr. Thrax and Ms. Cox... papaya is the crop to grow (tried it tonight, definitely liked it) and the idea of fish and pineapple for food turning into a high profit export definitely works out well in the long run!

Yes, but when your father went to school, he had to walk 10 miles in the snow, barefoot, carrying his books wrapped in twine, without a jacket, with his hair wet, and starving because all his mum could feed him was corn.

Dad, nobody cares what you do in the privacy of your own bedroom.   Just because you enjoy something doesn't mean the rest of us will!! Sad

C'mon, dad!  Welcome to the twenty-first century!  Corn is so... eighties!!  Remember when I tried to sell you on the idea of growing popcorn, and you told me it was a "fad" that was going to die out?  How about when I suggested we invest in developing corn meal and you said "nobody even eats corn bread anymore" and the next day we got that phone call from Kentucky Fried Chicken!

I'm sorry, but it's papaya for me and my people.  If you want to live in the dark ages and grow corn, feel free.  Just don't expect me to conform to your backwoods corn-growing ways anymore.  I'm my own dictator now, and nobody is going to tell me what I can or can't grow! Angry

Say "hi" to mom for me.  See you for dinner tomorrow, k?  Smiley

Son, I think it's time we talk about soldiers, I know you've heard things in school, and well I don't want you to be mislead, so if you have any questions about soldiers let me know, and I'll try to answer them.

Don't worry, dad, the soldiers have been very good to me.  They treat me like one of them.  In fact, they treat me better sometimes, always bringing me flowers and candy to brighten up my apartment.  Tonight we're all going to the nightclub to go dancing and then they invited me up to their place for a few rounds of naked Twister... I can't wait to see if they invited any of the caberet girls over, you know what I mean??  Cool

I don't think so, dad... the soldier in "normal" camo you spoke with spends his weekends dressed up as "Xena - Warrior Princess" Shocked

Maybe I should hang out with the guys from the dock?  Sad
