There are criminals in Tropico, but they are very sneaky. They never get caught in the act. See that old lady with the walker? She just robbed your bank. Cool

Because the tourists NOTICE that the crime has happened.

This might make them not want to come back (to the place where they got their wallet stolen!).  This could be a bad thing for your tourist industry; no?

Tourists notice but police don't notice for 90 calm years. Implausible.

Maybe, but that's how they chose to write the game.

I don't think it is any worse than 500 (giverertake a few hundred or more) tropicans representing a country's entire population.

Besides, how do we know that the police in tropico aren't somehow bribed and in on it?

It might be worth suggesting to PopTop if you think it should be different and can sell them on the idea.

I'm not sure if what I witnessed was a 'crime' about to take place; but, several times I've looked into the thoughts of a Tropican and their thought was 'Off to fleece some tourists'.  These were just ordinary Tropicans, farmers, construction workers, etc.  Remarkably, they were all Female Tropicans  ;)and all uneducated.

Not really... Wink
Your Tropican is planning to go to another island and steal from the tourists there. (Just like foreign crime gangs come to Stockholm with the intent to steal from tourists.)

Cheers

Maybe they were off to fleece actual Tropicans who just dress in really loud shirts while taking lots of photographs.

I know crime ticks off your citizens, and especially your tourists, but does it actually impact your economy? Are they actually stealing money from the nation?

No.

It affects 2 things:

Tourism:  This can mean loss of revenue through reduced tourism.

Overall Happiness:  One of the happiness factors.  If that number combines with other low happiness numbers then a valued employee may leave.

But there is no actual direct monetary loss.

Since you are new, I would suggest you dig through the big almanac in the game.  You would be surprised what is there.

How do you have crime but no criminals?

Tourists notice but police don't notice for 90 70 calm years. Implausible.

Read my I'm Baaack thread in the Nightclub.

Philosophically: Everyone is imperfect to a greater or lesser extent. Where the line is drawn by society to divide antisocial behaviors into those tolerated and those punished defines criminality.

In the Tropican Game World: Please be reasonable. The game world cannot display every minor distinction of behavior. Some things are modeled in the foreground and so visible while others are in the background and invisible with only effect apparent. It is unreasonable to expect a separate avatar for "Criminal" to represent crime.

Mechanically, crime is an aura effect of buildings and units (people). The intensity varies among them. So crimes are not specific, but rather generalized in the background. The Police Station and the Policemen units have an aura which counterbalances the crime aura - again generalized in the background. The foreground (on screen) use of the Police and Prisons is political not criminal or related to ordinary crime.

The thread in the Nightclub is not game related - don't bother with it.
