I dunno, maybe it was a bug or something, but airplanes stopped landing at my airport. I had managed to hang on to power for 120 years and was still winning elections with at least 65% of the vote (sometimes as many as 75% ) then it happined. Airplanes stopped landing at the airport. It took me a few years before I even noticed, it actually took a message from the capatilists telling me my economy has shrunk before I noticed I was 300 thousand short of the 2 million I had been sitting at for the past 30 years. When I realized the shortage of $$$ was caused by a shortage of tourists I began to notice that airplanes hadn't been landing. They just flew in straight lines from one side of the map to the other, never attempting to land. I tried firing my airport workers and hiring new ones, but that didn't work. I tried running a tourism ad campaign, but that didn't work. I tried bulldozing my airport, but apparently you cant bulldoze them. Anyway, has anyone else had this problem? Is it a bug, or is it part of the built in "we are going to force you out of power one way or another no matter how good you are" feature?

I've never seen this, either. Did you by any chance have docks servicing yachts, or were you going for tourists strictly through your airport? I'm just curious if all your tourists stopped coming or just the planes.

I've never seen it, but then I don't run a game that long, either Was there any pollution? Were the hotels completely empty? I don't know, maybe the touristas just got tired of your island and moved on the the next big thing (fad). :-/

Make sure you don't have anything in the path of the runway. Planes need a large clearance. I think you might be able to place buildings in the path of planes with "rapido" on, thus making it impossible for planes to land.

The only time I have seen this is when the workers had left. I hired a new worker and the planes started coming in again, completely loaded with tourists.

Just to answer all the above questions about my situation.
After the planes stopped landing, I switched a dock over to "service all ships" and got some tourists that way. After about a year, all my hotels were full again. However I was used to getting first class only passangers through my airport, and there is a BIG difference between $20 from the docks and $200 from the planes. I could have probably got my economy back in shape, but that is still a pretty big hit to the wallet.
There was very minor pollution. I had set up a sizable industrial area on the opposite side of the island where the smoke could be blown out over the ocean. The airport was between this area and the hotels.
The runway clearence area was still fine. I hadn't used any cheats at all this game. (I actually wondered if that might have been the case, like maybe the game let me put a building too close to the airport when it shouldn't have.) Apparently using Rapido won't let you put a building anywhere where you can't normally put one.
I guess this was just the result of running a game for way too long. This was the first time I've ever really gone past 80 years. Maybe after 120 years, everyone realizes the palace houses a skeleton who makes the rules and decides NOT to come to the island for vacation.

I don't know about that theory. I think that a palace with a skeleton that gives orders to the country would be quite a tourist attraction.

aye, the skeleton in the palace, the daily shootings, the most inbred population in the world, fun and games (like the regular raids on the goat ranch), the oldest showgirls anywhere, the most promiscous catholic priests on earth... tropico is so full of sights for a refined audience that it´s a miracle you aren´t flooded with tourists all the time...

Y'know, not meaning to get off topic, but Alastar really made me think about the game.
After the 120 year old showgirls, the skeleton in the office, and on and on and on, I am starting to doubt that this game even needs the option of drug cultivation. It is screwed up (not necessarily in a bad way) enough alreadly.

It matters not how screwed up it already is, everything always has room for some good old drug cultivation

My showgirls were NOT 120 years old. I was. I force my showgirls into retirement at the ripe ol' experienced age of 65. Then they get replaced by a pretty little 13 year old (maybe 14 if she is cute enough).. THATS what the tourists come to see. 13 year old show girls. Unfortunatly, I think I had a shortage of 13 year olds... Thus a shortage of tourists.

Hey little girl, wanna earn a shiny quarter? I was thinking about the Casino and how it employs four males. Where are the coctail waitresses in bunny suits? Perhaps they could make an entertainment complex with Casino workers, showgirls and bouncers. (Off-duty cops looking for extra caesh)

(I'm sorry, but I don't really want to pay for the 13-year old show girl's implants, or a 65-year old showgirl's depends). I've watched Howard Stern enough to know that I never want to get within 300 yards of a 65-year old showgirl. The idea of bouncers is a good way to get your tourism rating kicked down to 40, since tourists with black eyes are not happy tourists. (Unless, of course, it was the sexy 13 year old showgirl that gave him the black eye )

The game is designed to run from 1950 to 2020 - that is 70 years - for determining a score. The designers allow the player to continue beyond that but without the scoring mechanic active. For a number of internal coding mechanics related reasons, the game tends to be more subject to one-off corruptions after the calendar passes 2020. Your report clearly describes one such. No one cares to try to replicate the problem in order to discover the "bug" if indeed there is one. You could try backing the game up to an autosave version from before the planes started not landing. Otherwise any player in such a situation had just as well forget it and start a new game. What were you watching during all those years when the planes were just flying over? Did you have the sound turned off?
