Very strange, unless Eddy arrived with his "Rabid Wolves"!
Do you have a save before the massacre?

I've never seen nor heard of any event that causes mass death that doesn't involve shooting or the muerte cheat.

Now I've never used the random events generator in PI.  Did you have that on?

Coffeebean makes the best suggestion.  When you get a totally freak occurance you should save as quick as you can.  Breakaway Mac will probably review it for you.  He has an account here and checks his IM box here a couple of times a week.

Somethings are best left to the programmers to figure out.  Undecided

Can you tell us which scenario you were playing? It could possibly have been a really evil scripted event. Or were you playing a random map?

I've had that a few times, and it was a disease via the Random events.

An announcement is made and you'll start to see your peons drop dead over a period of around 6-9 months (ish). If you at the right zoom you'll hear the sounds as they die. Then you can just scroll over the island and see the bodies everywhere.

Just be sure to set your Immigration Office to 'open door' to get the numbers up quickly.

Whilst you might not have saved it may be worthwhile checking the autosave, just in case.

If not you, then who? If not now, then when?

I've had that happen too.  I had an island with about 80 people and it went down to 30 within a year despite high wages an open immigration policy and free puddings cups at the local pub for all the ladies.

I knew there was a reason I avoid that random disaster generator like the plague.

Bad pun alert.
