Okay, click on your palace, and see how many job slots are currently being filled.

If you have the cash, click on the funky little hat. This will bring up a message asking you if you want to hire a high-school educated worker to your island. Click yes.

Try raising the pay for your palace guards by a couple pesos and you should be able to draw a couple recruits.

You can also build armories and then guard towers which will increase your army size.

Firing your high school workers from other jobs , high school or uneducated, has a tendancy to force them to take another job.  Eventually, they'll wind up where you want them.

You could just try having no army.  Island I was working on yesterday had a fairly sizable army.  I didn't really need it because everyone was happy and no one had any reason to be upset and try to stalk my palace hoping to get a clear shot of me when I walked from my desk to the caberet, did I say Caberet, I meant College, yeah, the College to take a politics class to become a better dictator.  Anyway, For some reason, My military wasn't happy with me even though they were the highest paid peope on the island and had nice houses and all that.  When I was told I was in danger of a coup, I just fired all my soldiers and generals and blocked the slots so new ones would not get hired.  They all found new (productive jobs)  and stopped whining.  My military faction dropped to next to nothing within a few years and as long as I kept everyone happy I had no problems.  Without Rebels there isn't much need for soldiers.  And without Soldiers there is no chance of a coup.  Anyone else ever try this?

I haven't tried being without an army entirely yet - although I have taken great pleasure in firing the first two soldiers when they start to whine about low pay.  I click on them to fire them while yelling "Ha!  Take that!  Be a farmer!  Now you'll see what low pay is! Ha!"  Oh the joy!

Slacker,

in one game I had generals, two, I think.  I have never hired another whiner.

The only rebel or coup-er I have had to date was in a tiny test game I played where I deliberately ignored managing the population's opinion of me just to see how a coup or rebellion happened.  My one starting soldier ended up launching a coup and shot up the palace solo for a year or so before he dumped me into a rowboat.

I suppose I'm a benevolent despot.  I'll fix an election occasionally, but that's about as far as I go.

Oh!  I did once murder the whole population one at a time, but that was because it was so much fun using the editor's 'finger of god' to give them tuberculosis or heart attacks!

It's out of my system now.  Really!
