Hello everyone, I am rather new here, I have been reading this forum for some time now and decided to post.

My question is, how large is your military? On average. I, personally I am a big military man. The more guns I see, the happier I am. So I normally have about twenty soldiers, at least. But I am always trying to raise it no matter how large it is. Trust me, I need that large of one. Grin I am not exactly the nicest Dictator around. I think I would be liked more if I didnt have so many people killed......

Anyhow, what is the average size of your military?

Never touch the stuff myself.

Oh, you said Army....Ahhh, well, in that case Branden I tend to have around 5 soldiers for every 100 citizens, plus the associated Generals to support this number, and a further 5 policemen for every 100 citizens.

Granted, by the time you get to a population of 500-750 your island can look like a mass of green camouflage, but hey, that is why God the programmers gave us Army Bases (plural intended!). Roll Eyes

Welcome to the Cafe Branden, I have this feeling you're gonna be right at home here. Grin

Yes, that is a good idea. I will try that. Only problem I have is I can never keep my Generals from leaving. Cry It's like they would rather watch my palace get attacked then to help.

The worst thing with having a big army is watching all these chickens run when it comes to fight. Part of the reason why I use the police just as often.

I too normally have around 5 soldiers per 100 citizens. Usually the bane of me actually - My soldiers are never happy - I give them nice homes, good entertainment, well paid and they STILL always start a coup...Is the chance of a coup related to what the militarist faction thinks of you by the way?

Is the chance of a coup related to what the militarist faction thinks of you by the way?

What the militarist faction and, importantly, the faction leader think of you has a bearing on the chance of a coup.

Provide for all the needs of your soldiers and generals, by way of pay, housing, food, entertainment, health etc etc and you'll not have too many problems.

A few pointers. Every few years open the Almanac and scan all the soldiers and generals to check their overall respect and happiness. If any seem particularly low look at this individual in more detail.

Is it that they are living in poor accomodation? Perhaps you need to give them a nudge to more palacial surrounding. Perhaps you are not catering to his entertainment need. Remember you can determine the three most preferred entertainment outlets and you might not be providing him with a 'release'

Alternatively look at the factional support of your army. If you are treating the commies poorly, and many of your soldiers have a + or ++ communist leaning, you're heading for trouble.

Me? Well, I keep I very close eye on all my faction leaders. There opinions have a large bearing on the views of their faction members (as being head of the faction would entail) Sometimes, despite catering to their every need the faction leader is 'Concerned' at your leadership. Well, in that case it may just be time for a little dirt-nap. Grin

In addition to nice housing, you should pay the soldiers higher than the regular highschool grads. I always start them at 13 or 15 and keep them a few pesos ahead whenever I do raises.
I never have more than 1 per 50 population. Thats when they complain you dont have enough.

By using the Base and the Modernization edict... I have very few problems with the military.   As MrP said, keep them happy, but always turn a watchful eye on the gun-toters.

Also, keep a number of police on hand.   If you have a coup, arrest what you can.   The police are a reserve force, too.   If you have empty positions at any of your military installations... fire police.   They will normally move over to the empty Army slots.

big military? ah yes I have heard of this concept. Guard towers every 6 tiles, police stations, army bases all over the map, soldiers and police swarming all over the place.

not on my islands.

I keep my number of soldiers very small, 3 or 4, unless the there is a "rebel" factor built into the game.  I try to keep them happy with 2 or 3 bucks a month more than the other high school jobs.

I never have only a few.

I either have lots like some of the players here or zero.

Having just a few seems to give more headaches than it's worth.

Either commit completely to the military agenda or get out of the gun business completely.

IMHO, too few (3 or 4) will often mean 2 disgruntled troops, one chicken and one dead loyalist.
which means you'll soon be singing 'row, row, row your boat.....'

a fairly sized army (20 at least) means you have safety in numbers

My thoughts exactly.

At least 5 outposts and 2 armories or nothing at all is my motto.

And I never skimp on police and jails no matter which route I go.

I would never have a military without enough jail space to arrest half of my soldiers.

Kind of hard to do that when they're punching holes in your palace.

The last time I had an army larger than 4 I had a rebellion that i had to quell.  Was ugly.  Since then, i had 2 police stations and 3 military guards to protect me.
