  Most of those unexplainable losses of your ships are other pirates:  looking at my ships' logs,  I sent 5 ships to the same zone -

* the two brigs defeated pirate ships without losses;
* the two frigates often lost pirates in battles with other pirates (including pirate snows),  but defeated naval vessels;
* the schooner usually escaped from pirate enemies.

  All my crews had parrots,  most had peg-legs,  all officers had hats,  most were educated so that my small ships' marksmanship was over 4.5 .

  SO...I favour schooners until enemy navies get larger,  and brigs don't need many crewmen.

Speaking of education for pirates and all that. Roll Eyes

I had a Frigate that was full of people. I made them go to the schools untill everyones skills were a four or a five. I gave everyone a peg leg, parrot, and a hat, and everyone had weapons and food. I send it out and on its first cruise on its first raid the ship gets captured. This was very frusterating since I spent a lot of time putting them all through school and all that.

  Yes,  sethwbcl91,  nowadays I economize on time by sending captains and officers,  then any crew already waiting on board even with no boarding call active.

  Landlubbers can be sent to education without game-time loss (they are listed in the player's log) and are ready to replace losses at sea.

  It's all much easier when only one or two skills are targeted (e.g. marksmanship when the pirate king gives all a +2 enhancement,  then seamanship if many victims give my ships the slip).

  I'd like a game option where the skills of all crew of a ship are listed on one screen.

From the chief developer:

For tough regions there is nothing like a frigate and a galleon crusing together. Sure the brig can run. But this fleet does not need to run!
