Had a question....

Why would anyone ever get the big ships? They take forever to build and to stock, and ships are lost often enough where all I do is make Snows...

Does anyone actually favor getting big ships over the little ones?

On one particular random scenario I built, I did use the larger ships, but found that they sank more than my smaller ones (probably due to lack of captain and crew skill), meaning that I'd lose 15-20 crew on the ships first mission out.  Eventually I got the captain skilled enough that he wouldn't lose the ship, but the loss of 40 pirates and a ton of supplies and weapons working up to that point was such that when I finally got the bigger ships to succesfully raid they they weren't able to turn a profit for me.

In my oppinion, the Frigate and Galleon really can't be compared with the Snow, because the Snow practically can't cruise at all, and the Frigate and Galleon take so long to get everyone on board that they're really only useful for cruising.

Big ships are great when they are part of a fleet.  It takes some timign but you can send out your smaller and bigger ships to the same area at the same time and they work well together.

The smaller ships are good at catching up to prizes and the big ships finish em off.

I lose a lot less ships when i send out a fleet.

I sent my experienced Frigate into the Gulf of Mexico, where the chests are full and cannons are at 75%.  The last two trips combined Kidd brought back over $10,000, 15 wealthy captives and 7 pirates (but they just went to fill what she had lost...)

My two large ships sent into the GoM (the galleon on its maiden voyage, but after I had trained a lot of the crew in Swds) brought back over $23,000 in their last thre trips!

My strategy is to try and put my Galleon and Frigate into heavy lucrative areas.  When they say booty has been plundered, press Q to Quicksave each time!!!  This is so if they get sunk, you can reload from the last good point!!!!!

TIP:  Build schools and use the time that the big ships take to resupply and EDUCATE YOUR CREWS!!!!

As the game progresses you'll likely find that trade routes and such that you raid will bring in more military.  More military demands more muscle to contend with.  This is when the little ships wear out.

Also, the little ships can't cruise for very long and this can really hurt when you start to "over-fish" the zones you can reach with a small ship.

I often find, at least in sandbox games, that the zones within small-ship reach have no fish to speak of. So I am forced to build big ships in order to get anything.

I cruise alot with big ships.  I use frigates in heavy fire zones and brigandines in smaller zones, until it gets too dangerous (3.5 - 4 cannons). 4 and over, I send my frigates.

A couple of suggestions.

Get a blackmarket. Buy your food from there.  Two semi decent traders makes the food cheap to buy. Same with cutlasses.

Like mentioned before, train the crew. IDepending on the fighting style, pick one of those schools, but also definitely train the captains and officers in navigation and seamanship. By mid game, I rarely have any pirate, even crew members, with a 1 in navigation or seamanship.

Feel free to rush the boarding call. Once the captain is aboard, and enough crew to man the riggings, make it set sail early. A few missing deck hands or an officer is not a big deal, especially if the rest of the crew is well trained.

With these in mind, I've been able to rake in 10,000 doubloons plus boat loads of captives, new crew members, and cannons, all in one trip with my frigates!

I always use brigs. Try to get 3 always input sea ration factories per 5 brigs (or a higher ratio with less) and you should be stocked. For weapons, I just buy cutlasses at the very beginning, and pretty soon they can just self suply in cannons via cruising.

I've been running a looong sandbox mode, probably 30+ years, and I have definitely noticed that education does indeed go a long ways towards reducing casualties and ship loss.

Build the schools!   Grin

The Authoritative Answer !

As the game progresses you'll likely find that trade routes and such that you raid will bring in more military [opposition].  More military to contend with demands more muscle.  This is when the little ships wear out.

Also, the little ships can't cruise for very long, and this can really hurt when you start to "over-fish" the zones you can reach with a small ship.
