Editing ? if it can be done

I am paranoid about poking around in script and config files after some unfortunate "accidents" in other games.  If someone knows if this can be done and if it's not too complicated please help.

I want to know if there's any way to remap the hotkeys preset by the game.  I'm using a laptop to play, and I miss having one-touch zoom and rotate like I did on a regular pc with the first game.  The numpad I have now is embedded in the regular keyboard and accessed with a special function key (hard to navigate when I'm juggling a stubborn won't sleep in bed baby in one arm).

Barring that, I'm also open to suggestions on how to deal with a newborn who is perfectly content to sleep in bed while I do housework but somehow knows when I'm turning on the computer and insists on sleeping on me instead

I haven't found any way to remap the hotkeys, but there are hotkeys for what you want to do:

PAUSE    - pause game
Q            - Quick Save
ALT         - show hot key assignment panel
ALT 0-9   - assign hot key to building or person
0-9         - center on assigned building or person
G            - toggle grid lines
T            - toggle trees on & off
L            - bring up the almanac
M           - show strategic map
C           - toggle construction panel
E           - toggle edict panel
O           - toggle overlay panel
R           - show current resolution
F6         - switch to next lower resolution
F7         - switch to next higher resolution
Z           - show current zoom
- (NUMPAD)   - zoom out
+ (NUMPAD)   - zoom in
1-9 (NUMPAD)- scroll map
ARROW KEYS   - rotate map counter-clockwise
BACKSPACE   - center on subject of current circle window alert


Hope that helps! As far as the newborn problem, I'm unable to come up with any good advice, exept maybe something nasty. But I assume the newborn is your own, so all those ideas wouldn't work. Now, if the newborn was just some baby who decided to drop by and sleep in your house, that's a different story!
