The Gamespot review is excellent and well-balanced but I really must protest at the Gamespy review  Angry.  On the original Tropico: "It had a great premise and a lot of fun buried beneath its mountains of charts and far-too-complicated political interactions".  I would hardly call the logbook mountains of implied rubbish and the political interactions through the edicts were not complicated.  On P.C: "It would also have been be nice if you could actually control your pirates at sea rather than just giving them plunder orders and hoping for the best."  This is a city-builder game not an RPG.  "While the graphics certainly aren't state of the art" - They are a dadgumed lot better than some of the trash other companies spew out by the bucketload.  The Gamespy argument is highly illogical - flitting from one subject which is deemed "bad" only to praise it in the next paragraph.  If you want a proper review which is balanced and unbiased, go to Gamespot  by the link above which Mack the Knife kindly put up.  Smiley

tropico + pirates = funnest game ever

gamespy/gamespot gives 9's for whatever tired mindless real time clickfest game de jour.  Age of Mythology, warcraft 3, c&c generals... bleh.

Tropico is one of the more innovative games in a long time as is tropico 2.

"Fans of Tropico may wish that this were a more direct
descendant of the original, and those who like the new
pirate theme may wish Frog City had built a new game
from scratch."

The overall review score was VERY good comming from Gamespy though.  If you look at the big list of Gamespy reviews, 88% would be in the top 10% of all games the have ever reviewed (maybe better even).

I totally agree with his slave controll comments though.

I was just playing.  I had gotten two blacksmiths and built a smelting plant and blacksmith place.  I was wondering why I wasn't getting any swords showing up at all and when I looked BOTH blacksmiths were working at the dead blacksmith building.... I had to close out the jobs there to force them to go to the foundry smelting building (Arrrggg).

Instead of managing a small, developing country, Tropico 2 puts you in charge of a secret pirate hideout. You must kidnap workers to create a basic economy of products and services, and then keep them terrified so they won't try to escape. The historical accuracy of the scenario is questionable--did pirates really manage huge, thriving towns and industries? The morality is even more questionable, and the jaunty music and cartoonish graphics can't hide the fact that Tropico 2 could be more accurately named Slave Tycoon. The amoral attitudes of games like Grand Theft Auto III and Postal 2 are denounced, or at least they stick out, and yet the similarly amoral Tropico 2 has somehow not been commented upon, even though executions, kidnapping, slavery, and forced prostitution are the backbone of the game.

Gamespy review on the original Tropico: "It had a great premise and a lot of fun buried beneath its mountains of charts and far-too-complicated political interactions".
