Yeah, your police officers have to physically go out and apprehend the criminal.  As soon as the y do, they escort them to prison.  BUt when the escorting starts is when the prison term begins.  So you can only issue the edict as many times as you have openings.

As far as WHO to apprehend.  I look in my almanac under Lists - Respect.  I jail anyone under 20 respect, starting with the last person on the list.  I release them when there respect gets in the 60's, or if they are going to die from health issues (they don't get any service in the prison except food)

Mercator, your thoughts?? ...

do the police in the police station help to apprehend arrestees or is this just up to the staff in the prison?

Actually, the police are the only ones who arrest people.  The Prison guards just sit on their bum and make sure no one escapes.  I've actually had someone escape once because my prison guard decided to become a Teamster and left his station.  I didn't catch it until to late.  The person escaped.  I'm not sure what happened to her.  I think she just went back into the work force.

yeah, it was probably more like a bureaucratic error ...  "ma'am, you are hereby released because the guard responsible for you decided he wanted a change of employment, but just make sure you dont do anymore disrespecting, because we've got our eye on you- whoops, where'd she go?"

Regarding prisons, in one mission I set the option of forced labor for the prisoners.

After a while I was surprised to see a prisoner roaming around with that apprehended sign on his head. I thought what the heck, how come he's out there with the population? Only then did I realize that this option will send a prison guard out with a convict for forced and free labor.

Were you aware of this or is it that I discovered this late? Roll Eyes

Did you know you can kick people out of prison? Yep, you just shift click on them like you would evict them from housing.

Hmmm, forced labor puts an interesting question in my head...

Since most Presidentes seem to pay their troops (especially the generals) the highest salaries, I wonder if you could just arrest these highly paid men in green, then put them back out as forced labor?

One would think they would be pretty unreliable, but maybe the guard would force them to stay on the job?

It'd be terribly amusing to see them putting down a rebel uprising with their prison guards trailing along to keep them in line.

What kind of jobs can they do as forced labor, though? Does the game remember what job they did before you arrested them? (I've never bothered to build a prison, myself... my people are far too happy with me to need imprisoning...)  Wink

I've never arrested anyone either, but forced labor sounds inviting.

As far as the game remembering previous jobs, it would be the skill level they have developed that makes the difference.  Someone with 20 years as a teamster, with no other developed skill would be quite a good teamster.  For someone with 3 different skills developed prior to imprisonment, it wouldn't matter what they were doing last.  Whatever they have the higher proficiency at would matter more.

I treat rebel family members like rebels themself. if i have to imprison there wives i do there mothers and fathers and kids at adult age this only makes them respect me less but they stopped being rebels after a while i still kept track of them and killed the ex-rebels and had there whole family killed nd friend sent to jail.

Yow. You sound like Mr. UnHappy.  Wink

Only once have I wanted to arrest someone, and that was the unhappy leader of the intellectual faction, who was spending a lot of time protesting against my enlightened rule instead of moving cargo at the docks. But I hadn't built a prison. Sad  So I was forced to eliminate him instead. The next faction leader was far more tractable.

what is the effect on the populations view of you, after arresting someone, does liberty decrease, respect rise?  Just for the sake of arguement lets say its *not* someone who has spoken out against you...just some nobody tropican.

My old job wasn't suitable for someone of my social class.

I did some similar things in my "nastier" Presidente incarnations.  I figured "OK, so when you imprison someone, their families get really annoyed, right?  OK, easy solution - arrest the whole family!  Heck, they're probably up to something too...."  Evil can be fun.  I remember a perversely satisfying event where the Communist faction leader was running against me in an election.  I didn't do anything to her directly, but put her family in prison.  Then after the election, I had a bishop brand her a Heretic.  Later on, I happened to be watching when the shunned, demented old Commie bat (now a retiree) dropped dead of tuberculosis outside her pathetic little shack.....

Is it a good idea to arrest people for protesting. I always do this b/c i like playing the role of opressive dictator.

What happens when you arrest a person is... nothing.  Well, thier icon appears in the prison silouette and the become "smarter"/bring in money. They aren't physically in the prison. At least that's what I noticed and this was confirmed by several people.

BTW, why are people bringing up dead threads?!?!?!? Huh

Pinochet, the prisoners do physically go to prison, given time.

I rarely build prisons at all, but the last time I sent someone there, he walked to the nearby prison and stayed in there until released.
At the same time he lost his home, and had to find a new one after release.

Cheers
Olle

Oh, and a comment on the original question:
Prisons are for political prisoners, appointed by the president.
Regular criminals are automatically taken care of by the police without the need for a prison.
